How to get same day diagnostic or repair service from Apple

My keyboard has started failing. Some keys just suddenly stopped working simultaneously. I use an external keyboard to cope.

I cannot go more than 1 day without the laptop. It seems reasonable to expect that with AppleCare+, I should be able to get it diagnosed in one day, and then take it in another day for repair.

Is that possible? My experience has been that they sent me to a authorized repair shop who needs to hold it for at least a week before I get it back. They would diagnose it one day, then wait for parts for some days, then repair, then call me to pick it up. But this is just not possible since I need access to the programs and data on the laptop everyday.

How do I get same day diagnostic and same day repair?

There is no list of not-copied files -- all files are copied or the process halts in the middle with an error message.

Once you describe how it works, (logging you out) it makes sense because Migration Assistant wants to copy ALL Users on the old Mac to the new Mac. Your files should have been placed into a fully-working user account with the same name as on the old Mac, bypassing the new User created with Setup Assistant. If you logged in to the old User on the new Mac, the keychains SHOULD work there, but if they don't:

Yes there is a user account with the same name as on the old Mac. And when logged into it, the keychain doesn't work. So each and every online account I have, I have to recover the password. The problem is that the password reset link is being sent to some old email addresses I don't have access to, or can't log into because of the keychain problem.

I tried the link you sent about copying keychains - I tried to do it from the Time Machine backup to the new mac, but it did not work. I started a thread for that problem:

I'd also like to point out that I could not use Setup Assistant. I tried to, but it could not locate a Mac OS X installation on my backup drive or something.

So I then tried Migration Assistant and it gave the same error. I think that had something to do with the backup being Big Sur, and the new computer only had Catalina on it. So I tried to install Big Sur, but after downloading and trying to install, it failed twice (having to re-download it each time).

Then it worked on the third or 4th try. Then finally I could use Migration Assistant.

Still, no idea why kecyhain stuff didn't work. And I don't have the old computer anymore - I'm waiting for apple to repair it.

Any idea how I can access the home library folder on the backup drive? It still has the red circle with the minus sign and I want access to it so I can try importing the contents into keychain.

I figured out the Keychain issue. It turns out that I just needed to go to system preferences and icloud, then sign in. I guess i must have had icloud keychain enabled. So now those passwords are there in keychain and it prompts properly in Safari.

One remaining big issue - why can't I go into the Desktop, Library, Movies, Music, Pictures, Applications, or Downloads folder on the external hard drive? When I browse to those folders in Finder on the Backup drive, they are empty. And more importantly - if I go to my Downloads folder now on my migrated mac, there are many migrated files in there, but if I enter time machine, all past dates show the folder as empty. It is strange. Anyone know whats going on?

Time machine backups drives could never be properly examined with Finder, you need Time machine.app to look at them properly.

All those files on a Backup drive are likely owned by System, so they show as "No Entry" signs, and appear to be empty because you do not have READ access to tell what is inside.

But Time machine backup drive format changed at Catalina, making this even more complicated.

So when I "Enter Time Machine," is that the same as using Time machine.app? Because if I "Enter Time Machine," I do not see anything in the folders prior to the current date.

In other words - it looks like time machine has lost all previous data (in those key folders I mentioned: Downloads, Documents, etc). It looks like its not even backing up those folders even though those are the most important ones.
