I have the most recent version of Catalina on my late 2013 macbook pro. For some reason I cannot update to Big Sur. My computer keeps telling me that I have the latest update. Same goes for my imac. Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem so I contacted Apple Twitter support. On the app store, it says under Compatibility that my computer is compatible. I even sent them a screenshot (see last attachment). Every time I try to update to Big Sur, I get an error message even though my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid-2012) meets the specs (and more!) for upgrading.
There is literally no difference in the specs for my MacPro mid-2012 and its 2013 Macbook Pro cousins. Same chip, architecture, RAM. My MacBook Pro is actually faster than low-end 2013 and later models because I upgraded to the fastest everything. This is absolutely infuriating considering I spent over $6,000 so I wouldn't have to buy another computer for a long while. My MacBook is in pristine condition and runs swiftly.
Given I literally just finished paying off this computer, now they're saying I can't update it over some arbitrary and capricious cut-off point, I feel like I'm the proud owner of a brick. I can't help but wonder if this is the same scheme they used with slowing down iPhones in order to force consumers to buy newer models (a lawsuit that they settled).

Regarding your iMac, it needs to be a 2014 or later model: How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur - Apple Support.
I tried using the suggestions in the link and none worked. I ended up on a call with customer services and was told both computers are not compatible. I'm just worried that they will become useless. My main business is photography and I use Lightroom and Photoshop daily. I imagine that quite soon I will not be able to use these apps as they are intended. I feel like this was done on purpose to require old unit owners to buy newer models.
macOS "Big Sur" is most definitely compatible with a late 2013 MacBook Pro, but at present Apple is facing difficulties with certain models as their Support documents explain. I have reason to believe they are working on an update for affected models.
As for your iMac you have yet to identify its exact model designation. There are several dozen iMac models alone. The Apple Support document I provided explains hardware requirements.

You are never compelled to buy a newer model of anything, but after a certain period of time every digital electronic device becomes functionally obsolete, which means it becomes unable to perform tasks expected by an ever-changing, demanding and fickle consumer market. For Apple devices, that period of time is very approximately seven years. It has been that way since 1984.
