best option to get someone on their own apple id

Right now my son is the only one with an iphone. When we set it up we used his name, but our email address as his apple ID. We want to get him his own apple ID. What is the best and easiest route to do this? Can we just go into his phone and under setting change the email address from our email address to his email address? Or do we need to create his own apple ID then log out of his phone and log back into the new apple ID? If option 2 is best will he loose any data, contact, apps??? We want to move him to his own ID and email (because he is getting ready for college and we also want to transition us to apple phones. Really want the EASIEST NON COMPLICATED way.

Two options. If you will let him keep the Apple ID he has, you can do a name change on the Apple ID to his email address. This will allow him to keep access to all his data and purchases. Note the restrictions in the article.

Apple ID Name Change.

If you want to keep the ID he has, he can create a new Apple ID.

Apple ID - create a new.

Apple ID – Create

Family Sharing.

Family Sharing - Set up.

When changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. See Winston Churchill's response in the below discussion. Also set up Family Sharing between the IDs to keep access to your apps/purchases.
