Can I delete fcpx optimized files?

I have 931gb in a folder called Final Cut Optimized Media. Thats an insane amount of gb. What happens if I entirely delete the folder? The clips aren't copied for the library rather they stay in original folders. I would rather work with proxies than with optimized media. If I delete the optimized media then what will the thumbnails be in the editor? Original media? Or does it recreate optimized media to even show thumbnails? I just need to be able to edit faster and use less storage so I want to use proxies.

You can safely delete Optimised files.

Select the Library and then select Delete Generated Library Files:

In the next window choose what to delete:

Always use the FCP App to do this and not through the package Contents.

Depending on your computer and drive capabilities you should be able to work with the original media.

It's not a question of whether optimized or proxies are better, just a question of what you need for your system and your media. You may not need either. Many users work solely with the original media. Thumbnails have nothing to do with optimized or proxy media.

There are two places where you set how files are imported, in the Import preferences,

and in the Import window sidebar that reflects what's in preferences. If you drag and drop for import the Import preferences will be used.

Thanks for your responses. My footage is from a sony a7iii, so I'm assuming I don't need to optimize it? I just need the best editing performance. So I'm assuming proxies are better to work with than optimized. How would I set my final cut settings to it always creates proxy and not optimized?

Once I delete the optimized footage and I don't yet have the proxies then will it show any thumbnails (have playback) in final cut?

Ok thanks so much. I just noticed in my final cut preferences that I have something checked off that automatically creates optimized media for Multicam clips and most of what Im doing is using Multicam. Should I uncheck it? Meaning is it better to use proxy for Multicam stuff? In general for editing Ive noticed proxies work a little faster - should I assume the same for Multicam? Also, below are my computer specs and I use a slower hard drive - a non ssd one.

My computer Specs:

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)

2.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

ntel Iris Pro 1536 MB
