On macOS Safari "Call xxx using iPhone" opens Skype instead of using the native call handling (FaceTime)

Problem: originally stated in a frozen unanswered question from August 2018.

  1. On macOS Safari open a website which states a telephone number (as pure text or as a link with the tel:// URI scheme)
  2. Select the telephone number.
  3. A drop-down indicator appears right of the text selection. Click it
  4. You get the context menu "Call <YourSelectedNumber> using iPhone". Click it.
  5. This opens Skype.

Question: How can I get the native macOS UI handler for telephone calls / numbers? (FaceTime)

Solution, tested on macOS 10.15.7 Catalina:

Instructions as text (for search engines):

  • 0) After having installed the freeware preference pane SwiftDefaultApps you find it in the section for 3rd party preference panes. Open it.

  • 1) Open "URI Schemes"
  • 2) Scroll to the "tel" protocol
  • 3) Here you see that Skype is currently the handler for "tel://" calls

  • 4) Click on "FaceTime.app"
  • 5) You get a success message.
  • 6) You now have re-activated the native macOS / iOS "Continuity" user experience.
