I ma trying to do a backup restore from my iphone 12 to my iphone 7 plus as I need to send the 12 off for service. I have backed up on the cloud and on itunes. When I try to restore I receive an error message that my software is not up to date, despite all software updates. I have reset the 7 multiple times now trying to restore from cloud, pc, and iphone. Is the 7 just too obsolete now to be used as a backup device?

Your iPhone 7 would need to be on the same iOS version or later in order to restore the backup from either iTunes or iCloud. Since the iOS 14.2.1 update was only available for iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and iPhone 12 mini devices, this would explain why you're unable to restore the backup currently.
