New MacBook Air External Display Issue

I purchased a new M1 MacBook Air with more memory and storage to replace a 2018 MacBook Pro. My set-up with the Pro included having two different USB-C hubs attached, with one of the ports from each hub going to a display. One display was using HDMI (on one hub) and the other display was using VGA.

The new Air doesn't seem to want to let these two work at the same time. Both displays still connect while being the only one plugged in, but not when they are both plugged in.

For the meantime, I am using Airplay for one of the two displays but it's not as smooth as using the HDMI.

The M1 Mac notebooks only support one external display (connected via a cable). You can use AirPlay with a TV or Sidecar with an iPad, but only one physically connected display will work.
