M1 MacBook Air with external monitor crashes when sleeping

I've gotten several crashes this way. Almost every time I let my MacBook sleep while connected to the monitor. Here's an excerpt of the crash dump:

Just another follow-up:

I set my M1 power saving settings to default now (turning off the display after 15 minutes and allowing the computer to put the laptop to sleep when the display is off).

I actually tested this by setting it to 1 minute and walking away for 2 hours. Came back after dinner, computer was on the lock screen but had not crashed. (this was the expected behavior)

So, again, setting the DP port on the monitor for the Thunderbolt input to DP 1.2 seems to have resolved the issue for me as well. I still have the it set to DP 1.4 on the standard DP input port on the monitor, which is connected to my PC.

Quick update for everyone... LG just released an updated version of "OnScreen Control" on 27 Jan. This version (4.48) now recognises the 38WN95C monitor, but the only working feature so far is "Screen Split". The software isn't yet able to update the monitor firmware.

So we're still waiting on Apple and/or LG for a software fix for the sleep issue everyone is experiencing. A recent comment on Reddit provides a plausible explanation for the issue:

"I suspect this has to do with the fact that starting with Big Sur (Mac OS 11) the Kernel Extensions which were used by LG to connect at a low level to the monitor, have been deprecated. There is a new Kernel Module architecture that can be used to solve the problem but will require new programming. What is annoying about this, is that Apple has started with Catalina to deprecate these extensions and all vendors (including LG) have done nothing to adapt to the new system... let's hope there will be a new version soon, and let's hope the new release of Big Sur (11.2) will fix the resolution issues with the wide screen monitors."

Looking forward to a solution to end the daily/nightly crashes!

i contacted caldigit about this just to see if it was on their end and this is their reply

"Thanks for contacting us. This is an issue that we have seen previously with macOS computers and I would encourage you to contact them for assistance on this issue. Our information suggests that this is an issue with these computers (specifically the operating system’s interaction with basic Thunderbolt 3 drivers) which is causing this kernel panic with any Thunderbolt 3 device connected. Please note that this has been found with any Thunderbolt 3 device connected to the computers which have this issue and is not caused by your docking station."

i just want to once come back to my docked laptop and hit the spacebar and be greeted with a login screen instead of a black screen followed by a restart and a crash report. cmon tim apple. i bought your computer because it was supposed to "just werk"

Apple decided the cause of crash is bad logic board and Touch ID so they replaced them. The problem is that my M1 MacBook Air came back from Apple repair center with scuffs that didn’t exist before. They first refused to fix it, then they changed their mind so I’m waiting for them to send me the box to send it back for another repair. I’m not sure if the original issue was fixed by replacing parts yet but I’m very disappointed by Apple.

havent tried beta 2.

also, I don’t know how relevant this is, but I did a full clean install (what a horror show) and set the never sleep setting (lame) and it has not had any night terrors since.

Here’s the part that may be completely inconsequential: there were a lot of deltas between this not happening and then starting to happen:

  1. new monitor 38 inch LG (previously using the 34 inch LG via HDMI KVM)
  2. set chrome (gmail) as my default mail handler (this is the part that may have something to do with this?) curious to know if anyone else changed their default email handler.
  3. was messing around with a DisplayPort KVM (connect pro) and settled on TB3 for now, which is how I discovered the issue.
  4. i have another MBPro that works fine over TB3 connected with the same cable to the same monitor, no crash, but not running Big Sur and chrome is not the default mail handler

anyway, that’s the latest
