M1 MacBook Air with external monitor crashes when sleeping

I've gotten several crashes this way. Almost every time I let my MacBook sleep while connected to the monitor. Here's an excerpt of the crash dump:

Just another follow-up:

I set my M1 power saving settings to default now (turning off the display after 15 minutes and allowing the computer to put the laptop to sleep when the display is off).

I actually tested this by setting it to 1 minute and walking away for 2 hours. Came back after dinner, computer was on the lock screen but had not crashed. (this was the expected behavior)

So, again, setting the DP port on the monitor for the Thunderbolt input to DP 1.2 seems to have resolved the issue for me as well. I still have the it set to DP 1.4 on the standard DP input port on the monitor, which is connected to my PC.

I no longer get crashes, having downgraded my LG 38WN95C monitor to DP 1.2.

However, I now get two minor issues:

  1. On wake, the computer image is often too small, taking up only 70% of the external monitor display space, with everything scaled too small. To fix this, I either need to (a) reset the display scaling in system preferences, (b) turn the monitor off and on several times or (c) open and close my Macbook.
  2. At night my monitor turns on periodically, then with no signal detected, it turns off again.

These two issues are annoying, but less annoying than daily/nightly kernel panics and crashes, so I'm sticking with DP 1.2 for now.

Apple - please can you update the M1 kernel to stop panicking and be compatible with DP 1.4!

LG - please can you release an improved version of OnScreen Control that can update our monitors to firmware compatible with M1 Macs!

I don't think there is a resolution yet. Best thing is to open a case with Apple Support so your voice is tracked in their support systems.

  1. Ask them to escalate it / and ask for feedback on the bug with engineering. (resist their requests to reinstall etc. - as clearly this a system bug affecting multiple people and not caused by OS corruption).
  2. Refer them to the radar bug: FB8925129
  3. Refer them to the existing forum discussions on this:

The engineering manager for M1 graphics has also promised to have this investigated:

My M1 MacBook Air paniced every time it went to sleep. I‘m using the DisplayPort port on my CalDigit TS3+ to connect an older LG ultrawide monitor (34um95). I read about disabling DisplayPort 1.4 but my display doesn‘t have 1.4. However, there‘s a setting in the monitor that lets me disable DisplayPort 1.2. After disabling it, no more kernel panics. Sleep/wake works just fine. Make sure to power cycle everything after disabling it, including the Thunderbolt docking station.

I did some more testing using a CalDigit TS3+ and an LG38wn95c.

Connecting the monitor to the caldigit via thunderbolt and the caldigit to the m1 mac (also via thunderbolt) is definitely the cause of the problems. Directly connecting the monitor via thunderbolt to the m1 mac and and using a seperate port for the caldigit totally stops the crashes. This is with DP 1.4 enabled.

Band Aid Fix: Until addressed in a Big Sur fix is out- go to System Preferences-Energy Saver and turn display off after "never" (I'm on a M1 MacMini, no battery settings)

I've isolated the issue... IMO... it is definitely a Big Sur code issue with certain HW monitors. When the Mac system goes to sleep it creates a panic and reboots. You can set it to 3 hours and watch the panic later at that time with no activity.

My LG38WN95 is problematic with both MacBook Pro and M1 MacMini. No issues with Dell 3419. Also, the LG widescreen monitor drivers are not working for me, it states "no monitor connected." Apple and LG have some integration to work on, hint!

So, I have 2 Macbooks, 1xMacBook AirM1 and another Macbook Pro (not M1).

The M1, I have wiped, installed 11.2, (TOTALLY clean at this point, no new software, NOTHING). When I connect it over TB3 to my LG 38inch monitor and it goes to sleep, BAM, panic attack.

The MB Pro, over the SAME cable, to the SAME monitor, no issue.

It's 100% an issue with the MB AIR M1. This isn't a 3rd party application issue or anything. Same cable, same monitor, clean machine. panic.

I started having this issue - crashing after awakening MacBook Air M1with the pink screen - several months after pairing it with Apple Cinema Display 24-inch without any issues. These devices are connected via the Mini DisplayPort - DisplayPort 2.1 on Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Dock.

Apple looked at it and found no hardware damage, but it is still crashing, so I changed from the Mini DisplayPort - DisplayPort 2.1 adaptor to the Mini DisplayPort - USB-C adaptor. I also replaced the Thunderbolt dock with CalDigit TS3 Plus, and so far no crashing. It's not an ideal solution as I lost one USB-C port, but it's 100 times better than crashing the mac.

macOS Big Sur ver. 11.4
