Why does iphone screen go dark on calls?

I have an iPhone Xs. I make all of my calls on speaker phone. After a few second into a calls, the screen dims then goes dark. I tap it and it lights up then quickly goes dark again. Then is a problem if you periodically have to use the keyboard because you are always tapping twice (light up screen + keypad).

Any ideas how to fix this?
