New MacBook Air (M1, 2020) crashing all the time!

New M1 MacBook Air keeps crashing and freezing... I can't force quit as the keyboard becomes unresponsive.

Help!

Anyone else out there struggling with this?

I keep checking for system updates but nothing yet...

Erased and reinstalled OS at last 10

times. Apple sent it off for repairs twice. They couldn’t find any issues but still replaced logic board and touchpad both times. It still came back with same problems of freezing as soon as I used keyboard or touchpad. I was without a usable machine for almost two months from I bought it new. Spent many hours on phone with Apple support who didn’t have a clue and passed me around, often never getting back to me. They constantly refused to exchange it even though it was obvious the machine was a dud. Eventually they relented and I finally got a replacement. It works fine just as it should. And that was on 11.1 I remain convinced it was a hardware issue.

The 11.2 update did not help me. I spent another 2 hours on the phone with Apple support today. They are not acknowledging this issue, even though I pointed the senior technician to this discussion board and the other reports on the internet about this problem. Apparently, there might be an issue with Chrome, which is my main web browser - see, "Is Chrome killing your MacBook?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMtr-u0v8bk.

I have a new Mac mini (M1 chip and less than one month old) . I took to Apple store and the Genius Bar verified hardware ok and clean reinstalled software. Was told it was fixed and to not use migration assistant but clean install all programs. Problem still there. I am returning to dealer and just going to buy an intel Mac mini. I amused to Apple products working better than this right out of box

Two questions for someone not experiencing crashes:

  1. Do you use Fast-User switching?
  2. Are you using Microsoft Office 365 (installs OneDrive)?

We have about one spontaneous restart every 4-5 days. Far higher than on my older Intel Air, but better than many here. We did use migration assistant to go from High Sierra. I've seen improvement after reinstalling macOS and one of the recent Big Sur updates. This is still not an acceptable behavior though.

The last step is a full wipe and reinstall -- but that's at least a full day of my life. At my age I don't have that many life days to burn!

I'm going to give it at least one more macOS/firmware update before going there.

I received the MacBook Pro from the service center. Instead of a hardware swap they did a clean install of MacOS. I restored the system from the external usb drive using Time Machine. The only applications I have not restored were Acrobat and the classic Lightroom app that still require Rosetta 2. Anyway, no problem so far but as I mentioned above the system only froze about once a week.

Same here. I have the MacBook Pro M1 8GB and the memory is almost always on near full capacity for some reason. It keeps telling me that certain webpages on safari are taking up a lot of memory, which caused the system to crash twice already. Everything was unresponsive and only a forced restart could help. I know 8GB memory isn’t a lot but it should be able to run regular apps like safari, Spotify, WhatsApp, mail and a simple Text editor at the same time without any problems. This is by far the fastest Mac I’ve ever owned and so far the only one that has crashed doing these basic tasks.
