New MacBook Air (M1, 2020) crashing all the time!

New M1 MacBook Air keeps crashing and freezing... I can't force quit as the keyboard becomes unresponsive.

Help!

Anyone else out there struggling with this?

I keep checking for system updates but nothing yet...

Erased and reinstalled OS at last 10

times. Apple sent it off for repairs twice. They couldn’t find any issues but still replaced logic board and touchpad both times. It still came back with same problems of freezing as soon as I used keyboard or touchpad. I was without a usable machine for almost two months from I bought it new. Spent many hours on phone with Apple support who didn’t have a clue and passed me around, often never getting back to me. They constantly refused to exchange it even though it was obvious the machine was a dud. Eventually they relented and I finally got a replacement. It works fine just as it should. And that was on 11.1 I remain convinced it was a hardware issue.

My new M1 macboook pro 16GB is doing the exact same thing with only mail and safari running. I have no third party software installed. Feels like an issue with memory allocation and the GPU cores as my screen consistently flashes pink and the computer locks up and reboots. I do have lots of mail in mail. In the Gigs. I get the impression that the dynamic memory allocation or hardware resources of the gpu is somehow becoming corrupted.

I'm experiencing the exact same thing. It aggravates me to no end when the response for these types of things is to download some background software to find out what external things are causing this OR turn off a normal function of the laptop.....It's like people are scared to say that Apple has a mess on their hands.

At least 5-6 times per day safari freezes up on me and it takes me 2-3 minutes before everything unfreezes. Even then I have to exit safari and restart it. I hear it could be related to some background app compatibility but I can assure you this doesn't happen on my 7 year old hp laptop or any of the Dell machines.

The external display is also an issue. I purchased a Hyper Drive dock and have an AOC monitor attached. At least 8 times per day the monitor goes black and I have to unplug and re-plug the doc. I've seen videos online where some users didn't have this issue if they used the apple dongle (which is severely limited in options) with a high end monitor. (also...not issues experienced on other laptop brands)

I want to like this laptop. I really do. But I'm 5-6 more freeze ups from returning it.

I personally returned. Is just silly that common task in safari are causing issues.

they told me “you should install malware software probably is a virus” I had the computer only two days with me! And the issues started. I’m using my old 2015 MBPro and no issues at all, seemed to be a good idea upgrading but definitely it wasn’t. They told me, you can take it to service for a repair, I’m like: WHAT? Is a 2 day old computer and already needs a repair?? So silly.

Seems it's a problem with the chip, As I have a mini Mac with the M-1 chip and it does the same thing. It's crashed 8 times now. So it's not isolated to a Macbook. The speed is great, but not when it crashes all the time.

If you read the crash report, it's the chip that's causing the crash. The cores are having the issue. Seems Apple didn't do much testing on this new chip it appears. As how could so many already have the problem right out of the box? I have virtually nothing installed on the machine, maybe a browser. Pretty poor testing on Apple's part.

I have had my M1 Macbook Air 8Gb RAM 512GB SSD for about 2 months now. Performance is great when doing tasks like video rendering, but the beach ball appears in simple tasks like loading a web page on Safari, opening small apps like Press Reader or even browsing files in Finder. I read that it might be 3rd party software running in the background, but not even sure where to start troubleshooting. Whish Apple will fix this with a software update and really hope I don't have a defective laptop.

I see a lot of confusion in the thread as to what could be the culprit, but I don't use most of the software that's being blamed and I have this issue as well. I've been using my M1 MBA (16GB, 1TB) for 1 week, and it's completely frozen 4 times, needing a forced shutdown.

Like I said, I haven't installed any of the software that's being blamed, with the exception of the native Safari. Originally, I used Migration Assistant to set it up, but have since then done a clean reinstall of BigSur. That didn't fix the problem either. It could potentially be the Rosetta emulation of code meant for Intel machines, but that's just a conjecture (like everything else in this thread).

As usual, we have a product that seems to have been poorly tested, and complete radio silence from Apple. Customer support isn't helpful either. I suspect it will be like any other time that hardware is consistently faulty, taking quite some time until it's acknowledged and a repair program is set up. Although, if the issue is software — which is fair since the M1 chips are brand new and it will take a while until they're fully stable —, perhaps an update will fix this.

It's either this or going back to Intel, y'all, so hold on :)

I think that Adobe InDesign is mostly responsible for my crashing, for the reason you explained. Of course I don't have a choice and must use it. Although a few weeks ago InDesign released an update which seemed more stable, a Mac Software update (which I unfortunately did) has lead to yet more crashes.

So I imagine we will be in this situation for the foreseeable future: where a Mac update improves the Mac apps, but potentially messes up existing apps.

I have already been through this process when Apple moved to Intel chips many years ago, so it brings back memories. Still, it would be polite to have some presence from them in this thread, it feels a bit arrogant to remain silent.
