iphone 12 dropping calls

My iPhone 12 Pro has been dropping nearly all calls since receiving after launch. The tech said "Oh, the diagnostic reported 13 out of 18 calls dropped recently, so that's not good". I purchased through Verizon, and have since gone through multiple resets, SIM card replacements and phone replacement and still have the same issues. All of the support was through Verizon and ultimately Verizon said this was a known issue with Apple and that I should take it up with them. So I just finished testing with an Apple tech, after over an hour on another phone I had to borrow to get this addressed. The Apple tech took it to his level 2 who ultimately said it was a Verizon issue, without a doubt because there is zero chance 2 new phones would have the same issue. They then placed me on hold because they said they wanted to bring Verizon on the call because I told them Verizon said to take it up with Apple. The Apple tech gave up after 35 minutes of being on hold and said we could try again later. Ha!

So no one is owning this known issue and I am stuck with a $1000 piece of garbage. Never again! I am going to have to shell out more money to get another phone and I am absolutely dropping Verizon as well. I would really like to know through all of this, is there anyone with the new iPhone 12 that is not having any dropped calls?

We have iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max both on AT&T and not a single dropped call yet since launch of both.

This leads me to ask those who are having dropped call issues the following questions.

  1. Did you transfer the sim from your previous phone to your new phone? If you did, you should get a new sim which is provisioned for 5g
  2. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data - What is it checked? If you live in an area with minimal to no 5G service (5G is still rolling out across a lot of the world), and your phone is set to 5G, you'll drop calls. Change it to 5G Auto or if you don't have 5G where you live to LTE

Otherwise it seems from those posting here, the common issue is Verizon. You should be hammering Verizon on this as it's most unlikely an issue with the phone. The entity who controls calls on your phone is not Apple. It is your cellular provider.

Apple did make a phone that is compatible.

I and millions of others use Wi-Fi calling all day every day without issue.

For example, I have AT&T and regularly take calls and leave or return home meaning I transition between cellular and Wi-Fi calling multiple times without issue.

However, when Wi-Fi calling was first offered, I experienced an issue similar to that you describe, until AT&T got the Wi-Fi/cellular handoff right across their network.

Either way, it's a cellular provider issue.

The network cannot be expected to overhaul the entire nation’s infrastructure overnight to accommodate apple’s newest phone.

The fact is that my old phone worked fine where I live. The new phone does not work as well. It’s as simple as that.

To elaborate a little further, I believe I have identified the problem in my case. I live in a secluded area on the fringes of my networks coverage. I rely solely on cellular data at my home due to Wifi not being available. I am more sensitive to diminished reception abilities due to these circumstances.

I presume the “millions of satisfied iPhone 12 users” you continually cite to diminish my claims all live in urban areas and/or have ready access to wifi throughout the day.

I've given the explanation several times.

If the carrier can't be bothered to configure their system correctly, there's nothing Apple can do about it.

Think of it like this:

There is a traffic cop directing traffic onto a three lane highway - motorcycles go in lane 1, cars in lane 2, trucks in lane 3.

Unfortunately around the corner they only finished building a bridge for lanes 1 and 2.

Trucks keep crashing off the unfinished highway into the canyon below.

Must be the fault of those stupid trucks.

That's what blaming Apple here is; the cellular companies direct the traffic, they own the towers, but they're telling the iPhone 12 to do things the cellular infrastructure isn't doing correctly.

I have a 12 on T-Mobile and every call drops when I'm in my vehicle - When it drops, the phone shows no bars - I have to toggle airplane mode on/off to restore. I've done everything possible from web suggestions to Apple's suggestions. Wipe and setup as new, reset network settings, turn off 5G, etc. - Many times now.

Moving the SIM to an android, it NEVER drops. Another issue is making calls - On the iPhone, calls can take several seconds 5-20 to complete the call and start ringing. Android (brand new S21 5G) connects instantly and has yet to drop a call.

I've worked with Apple who totally denies the existence of the issue and T-Mobile is who suggested moving the SIM to an Android to see if it's their issue.

Moving the SIM does nothing, the SIM just allows your phone to connect to the network, it doesn't define what kind of phone it is and what its capabilities are to the tower.

Your Android phone likely cannot use the frequencies misconfigured at the tower (or that are poorly received due to environmental or atmospheric conditions) so of course you would never see the issue with it.

It all works for your cell provider though, as they know you'll get mad at Apple, not them, and they don't have to spend a dime sending a tech out to the tower to correct things.

There seems to be a lot of unhappy 12 owners including myself having the same problem on this forum, dropped calls, mine will loose service and not regain service until I toggle airplane mode then immediately full service, has to be a phone issue as I’m pretty sure the carrier can’t control how the phone switch’s or searches for cell towers, coworkers with androids are not having this issue at all.

And those co-workers all have phones with 5G modems? My guess would be no. Also define "a lot." Do you truly believe this thread represents a lot of iPhone 12 owners? If you were to start at the beginning of the thread and count the number of unique posters who are having an issue, you'd find it's not many people. It's important to note this is the largest iPhone forum in the world and yet out of the millions upon millions upon millions of iPhone 12 owners out there, very few seem to have found their way to this forum to complain.

That doesn't mean 'you' don't have a problem. But in contrast to you, no one I know with an iPhone 12 is having dropped call issues and I know several people with iPhone 12.

Jun 17, 2021 8:32 AM in response to iPhone123gissues

Of course it is. Let's just be fair in acknowledging this is not an issue which effects all iPhone 12 users. If it was, this thread would have blown to gargantuan proportion. And when you factor in the issues caused by the cellular providers, it becomes more a cellular carrier issue as opposed to an iPhone issue. That's little comfort to someone who has dropped call issues. But it is the most likely culprit for dropped call issues.
