Zapf Dingbats not working in InDesign

I've come across an issue with Zapf Dingbats not working in InDesign (system High Sierra). Seems that the font is available, but it always seems to revert back to the previous font, i.e. changing from Frutiger to Zapf always goes back to Frutiger. The only way around this issue that I've found is to hold alt + command to select zapf and it seems OK. Shame as I've been trying to write a GREP using a character style sheet to automatically do this, BUT that doesn't work as you can't force the font.
