I am trying to update my MacbookAirRetina but I am having difficulties.. I have tried to updated but the Macbook air has not update How/ do I get around this problem

Not sure why or where you're trying to enter your serial number but…
I have tried 3 times to upgrade but each time I was unsuccessful so I was checking compatibility and it did not like my serial number.
What will be the problem if we do not upgrade. I will try again. I will read the instructions again.
I have entered my serial number but it is not recgonised
