Around 2-3 times a day, my M1 MacBook Pro on macOS Big Sur 11.0.1crashes and restarts.
This will happen when I'm doing anything from browsing the internet to using xcode.
The screen looks like it glitches out to purple and then it just restarts automatically

Maybe some success.... I had a call with Apple Tech Support. Amazingly patient. Here is my configuration that crashes:
1 USB-C port is connected to an Anker 8-in-1 usbc hub which has HDMI, 2xusbc 2xusba, sd-card, ethernet.
1 usb-c port connected to a Dell monitor via a usbc to display port cable. More on why the separate connection to external display.
His conjecture was that somehow the video processor in the hub was confusing the M1 coming out of sleep.
So I used a basic usbc hub with no video out (just usbc power in, usbc to M1, 3xusba, SD-card). I used the other usbc port on the M1 to drive the external monitor.
I have had no crashes over the last few days.
However, when I connected the HDMI out of the Anker hub to my monitor, it promptly crashed.
Suggestions:
(a) Try to use hubs that don't have video out.
(b) Use the M1's own usbc to drive external monitors.
I do realize that not all of you will have the configuration or the same crashes that I do. Apple is looking through my crash logs to determine the cause; no hub should crash an OS.
Good lord! Am glad I'm not the only one having this problem. Initially thought it was a Big Sur issue but I have an Intel based MBPro and a MacBook with the same OS version and neither of them crash. This new M1 iMac? Wow! Can't leave it alone for more than an hour or two and when I come back it's at the log in screen.
All the machines are connected to the same network and same type of devices EXCEPT the iMac has the new Magic Keyboard with fingerprint ID, a Magic Trackpad, and the new Magic Mouse...to which none of the other devices are connected.
The good news is I had an older wired Apple keyboard that I have to use to log in since after these crashes both the Trackpad and Magic Keyboard have been disconnected.
Maybe related but am not sure but my iPod Pros keep disconnecting from my phone when I'm close to the iMac (as if the iMac is stealing the connection). Disconcertingly, this happens right in the middle of a phone call.
Could this be an issue with how the M1 processor connects to BT devices? Shouldn't be the case but those are the details. Have sent numerous crash reports to Apple but haven't heard boo, yet.

It sure sounds like the «new Java install» is the likely culprit, especially if it is not M1 Native.
This is something you haven’t had to deal with, previously: a fundamental distinction between Central Processing Units (CPUs); M1 vs. Intel, in this case.

BlueTooth going “out” has been a problem, at times, even under Catalina, on Intel processors.
It’s certainly nothing new to Big Sur or the M1.
I have exactly the same problem. It is only about a month now (macbook M1 first use in January 2021) that several times while working on MS Word, screen goes purple and the machine shuts off. (Btw no bluetooth devices or any other device connected to the machine)
This happens to me too. Usually combined with connecting/disconnecting from external display and sleeping/waking while connected to external display.
I'm on a M1 MacBook Pro 13" (2020).
I just got the new Mac Mini and it crashes frequently. Purple screen and reboot. It's not reliable at all right now.
I too have experienced this 2x today. Its happening enough now to make the machine unusable.
I don't have any bluetooth devices or any of the mentioned software.
I sent the report in.
Sigh. It is already updated. Last crash was an "inserted at offset past object bounds" kernel panic.
I have the same issue, but it seems to happen mostly when I have connected the MacBook Pro M1 to my Dell TB16 dock. Quite annoying...

An OS should not be that easy (impossible?) to crash by any apps. In my case, all the KEXTS belong to Apple. It is a big Apple screwup.
Well, I returned my M1 for a full refund (not exchange), so I can now mark this issue as RESOLVED. I've been a long-time Apple fan, and I'm sure they'll refine this system with time. I'll wait.
I was unable to solve this and have returned my M1 MacBook Pro. Loved it when it worked, but crashing 2-3 times a day wasn't working for me.
