My new iPhone 12 Pro Max toggles the silent mode switch randomly to the on position. I don’t know why it’s doing that. I’ve turned off the “do not disturb” and “schedule” functions but the silent mode still toggles randomly to the on position. Could it be a software issue?

My switch was being toggled by the Apple silicone case. If you have an Apple case, you can easily duplicate this by gently pushing the top left corner of the case (the one nearest the silent mode switch) toward the back of the phone. Without much effort, it will trip the switch. So, in my case, when my phone was in my pocket, it would often flip the silent mode switch. Since I returned the Apple case and replaced it with an Otterbox Symmetry MagSafe case, it no longer accidentally flips the switch. However, the my MagSafe wallet does not stay on as well as it did on the Apple case. I do not know if it's due to the strength of the magnets or the fact that the silicone case was "grippier" or something else. I saw where another poster replaced his Apple case with a Nomad case and the problem went away. Good Luck!

I am having the same issue with my new 13. Apple sent me to repair shop and phone is good/all comments here say it’s the case?? Apple case was expensive and what case do I buy now

I’ve been having this problem for weeks and finally realized today it was the case causing it. I just googled it to see if anyone else was having the same problem. I’m assuming everyone here having the problem has the Apple silicone case?
Make sure the Accessibility/Touch/Back Tap/Double tap or Triple Tap is not select Mute.. Otherwise it will trig to turn silent mode on/off due to the sensitive how you touch the phone or in the pocket. Once you have unchecked the mute option for back tap.. it will stop randomly turn silent mode on/off.

I started having this problem as soon as I bought an OtterBox for my iPhone 11. Storing the phone in my pocket inevitably ended in the switch being manipulated by the case until I finally took a scalpel and cut some of the plastic out of the access hole. Unfortunately, this week in the box, and eventually it cracked. Time to buy something other than an OtterBox I guess-or at least a new model! (No, it isn’t the iPhone that is shutting itself off.) No complaints about the phone!
Yes, it was the silicone bridge that kept turning my switch off and when I finally trimmed it away, the problem right away. Unfortunately, I think that we can do the case a bit, since we now have a big crack in the case. That being the case, I am off to buy a case for my iPhone 11 that is more rigid and therefore unlikely to bend when it gets put in my pocket.

No it doesn’t. Some external force is required to activate the silent button. There is no little motor in the phone that moves the switch.
I had same problem, cutting off the bridge in my Apple silicone case solved the problem on my iPhone 13 Max Pro! Many thanks!
