all of a sudden mac says excel files are corrupt

I'm trying to download Excel files from a known safe source, but whether I click the Downloads folder or try to open an existing Excel file, a pop-up says the file is corrupt, and do I want to move it to trash.

Are you sure the source properly created a valid excel file or did they just name a file .xls or .xlsx? Maybe the file at the source is corrupt. How are you downloading the file? What version of excel was the file created with and what version of excel are you trying to open the file with?

What do they say in the Microsoft/excel Help Communities?

I wasn't aware of the Microsoft/excel help community website - thanks for the link.

The same error message is coming up on xlsx AND docx files that I have on my Mac as well as in Dropbox, where I store 97% of my documents.

Also in Dropbox I can open up a jpg, but after I close it and attempt to open it again, I get the same message: “xxx.JPG” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash."

I'm wondering if it's a result of the latest Mac update to Big Sur 11.0.1.

I'll go to the MS website now to search.
