Can you connect two pairs or airpods to one phone during a phone call?

Hello everyone! I have a question regardint airpods functionality. I successfully connected two pairs of airpods (mine and my boyfriend’s) to his iphone 8 plus and we could listen to a song coming from his phone on both of our airpods. But i was wondering (i think I reas this somewhere) if you can connect two sets of airpods to one phone during a call (so that we can both listen in, even if only one of us has the microphone enabled). If it’s possible, how do we do it? Thanks for the advice!!
