iMac restart stalled after installing High Sierra

Hello - I've restarted my iMac for the first time after installing High Sierra 10.13.6.

The loading screen has stalled out and is still showing the black screen with white loading bar for about 30 minutes now.

I'm wondering if it's trying to install the latest OS update? Although I'm pretty sure I disabled auto updates but now have no way to check.

Is there a way to reboot the restart and bypass a possible OS update? I don't want to install Catalina. I've never had this happen on restart - ever.

Thanks.

OK found the answer after all. I shut down with the power key and then restarted holding the Shift key until the Apple icon showed up (safe mode). The restart went through without stalling this time.
