Catalina 10.15.7 SHUT down issues- cannot turn off iMac without it rebooting

I understand that I am one of many from searches but I have yet to see an answer that works. I upgraded (?!?!?!) to Catalina 10.15.7 on my late 2012 27" iMac. Obviously, I looked at the posts out there. Yes, I reset the SMC and NVRAM. Yes, I removed the external drive that had Time Machine on it. I use Carbon Copy Cloner anyway to backup as it is superior to Time Machine. Yes, it was started in safe mode. These drive are off always and only on when I need to back up. Still the computer will not shut off or will shut off and reboot!🤬

Starting in safe mode did not solve any of the issues with Catalina and shutting down my iMac. I am still unable to power off my iMac by choosing Apple menu () > Shutdown. I get to wait and come back to find it rebooted once again and then I can click the "Shutdown" icon on the menu of users. Very annoying. I know I am not the only one with this issue.

I removed all older applications that do not function with OS 10.15.7. I do not understand why this issue cannot be solved by Apple. I just want to turn off my computer without holding down the power button or unplugging the computer.

PLEASE TELL ME SOMEONE HAS SOLVED THIS PROBLEM

I understand that Mac is suffering from kernel panics: If your Mac restarts and a message appears - Apple Support describes the necessary actions to take, yet they did not resolve the problem. Is that correct?

Contact Support to have that Mac evaluated for a hardware fault. Given everything you did it seems to be the likely cause. Apple's Community Specialist was remiss in not ultimately responding to you with that recommendation.

The best test is to do a clean install of macOS to see if you still have the shutdown issue. If you do, then you have a hardware fault with the iMac. If you have a spare USB drive, then you can perform the clean macOS install onto the USB drive so you don't have to disrupt your main internal boot drive. From what you have described I'm guessing you have a hardware fault of some kind with either the power supply or the Logic Board.

No my iMac will NOT shut down SINCE I "upgraded" to Catalina. It is a matter of semantics. Is my iMac suffering from kernel panics thanks to the "upgraded" OS or is it just a coincidence that I now may have a hardware fault.........yeah, right.....

The message is "Your computer was restarted because of a problem. Click report to send to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple". The issue is I WAS JUST SHUTTING THE COMPUTER DOWN! I was not restarting it. I was not doing anything. All the programs were closed. I was just going to the menu to shutdown Apple menu () > Shutdown.

Of course as it "attempts" to shutdown for the first time, it goes into a blank screen like it is hung and then eventually reboots after 2 minutes. I can then move the mouse to just shutdown and it will.

Annoying? **** yes. I cannot play with it as of now since it is needed for online school work for my child. The response regarding a "clean install" is a simple cop out and is a laborious task. Very disappointed #ThanksApple
