Mac unable to communicate with Apple Watch

Since upgrading to Big Sur my Watch will not unlock my Mac. When I click on the box to 'Use Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac' it comes up with the error message 'Your mac was unable to communicate with your Apple Watch'. When my watch was new and my mac was on High Sierra it just worked, even without me having to set it up.
