I love this new MacBook with Apple silicon but I don't love that it keeps adjusting my screen brightness down to almost half way whenever it chooses. I notice it when I come back and wake it up after a time.

I did manage to find that and change it. I don't seem to be having trouble lately and can't remember if I found other preferences to help, but this was happening both plugged in and on battery. They were somewhat different though. I appreciate your help on this! 😀
Surely the Mac dimming the screen when the room gets darker is the desired behaviour? Everything else in your post seemed to warrant a replacement but that part seemed like a typo
Same here, it keeps dimming down to become just barely visible. It's annoying.

The good thing with those Intel Macs is that, from what i read at least, it can be resolved with a SMC reset.
Which doesn't exist anymore with M1 hardware.
I have the same problem with my M1 Mac under natural light. Is it a software or an hardware issue (I hope not)?
On my MacBook, I found it was the power/charger contact only causing this, and it is gone by simple check.
It may be just as simple.
