How to use Apple Sidecar Wired Connection?

I want low latency when mirroring my iPad Pro display from my Macbook Pro. So when using Sidecar, I plug it in.

  • iPad Pro set to trust Macbook Pro
  • Macbook Pro set to trust iPad Pro
  • iPad Pro on Airplane Mode

I am on Big Sur and No option to Connect through wire. I only get 2 wireless connection methods.

1) Display Menu in Control Center

2) System Preferences > Displays > AirPlay Display> My iPad Pro

Obviously, I get this pop up

Is there no way to connect though a wire? I am plugged in with USB-C to Macbook Pro

I want to use "only" the wired option, and with Big Sur and an M1 MacBook this has not proven possible - it wouldn't matter too much, but my network is slow, and sidecar produces a marked drop in download and upload speeds (I can't work out why that should happen, since surely the iPad and MacBook have plenty of bandwidth for "internal" communication), but using Duet, the problem is solved - no lag, no need for wifi on the iPad - just working as an extra monitor - so now I can uses ECAMM for live streaming with the MacBook screen, a second monitor and the iPad - so overcoming the limitation of only 2 screens with an M1 mac.

Hi guys! Also had this problem but figured it out. I'm on Mac OS 11.3.1 and iPad OS 14.4.2 Here are the steps I followed:

  1. connect iPad to Mac with cable
  2. open Finder on Mac
  3. click on iPad in finder sidebar (it will be listed under Locations)
  4. click on "Trust" on Mac
  5. click on "Trust" on iPad
  6. open sidecar on Mac, select iPad, and connect

You can test if your wired connection is working by turning off Bluetooth on the iPad. If there is no "trust" option on your mac, on your iPad, go to General>Reset>Reset Location & Privacy. Then, just disconnect and reconnect your ipad and start from step 3. Hope this helps!
