Display Preferences on new Mac mini (M1 chip) with Big Sur.

Everytime I start up, log in, wake from sleep, etc. I have to open display preferences to adjust the size of the screen so that I can see it in its entirety (see screenshot). The display prefs are not being saved at shutdown. Also, the screen size adjustment slider doesn't always appear as an option (see preferences in screenshot).

o This needs to be set up on your TV

Get out your User Manual and set the mode to "Dot by Dot"(Full Screen)

If you have a hard time finding that obscure setting, download the Owners Manual and do a search.

Now your M1 BigSur Display Setting: "under scan slider" will be at zero with a full display.

Most TV HDMI inputs can be set to different modes, just keep that in mind when swapping locations.

HDMI 01- Dot by Dot(Full Screen)

HDMI-02 Stretch

HDMI-03 Zoom

HDMI-03 Side Bars

Thank you ! ! !

I just realized for some strange reason i had to disconnect my hdmi 2 while using my mac.

Strangely when i turn off the tv it by default goes to my verizon cable tv input and wants to recognize that one first.

I can actually see my menu bar ! It's a miracle. I took a screenshot of another users menu bar and have guessing where the icons were this whole time. lol

Thanks! I was having a similar problem of Big Sur not remembering my overscan setting on my new MacBook Air. Every time I turned the TV off, then on again, the Mac settings went back to no overscan and I couldn't see the upper menu and the lower part of the dock. So I went into my TV settings (it's just a cheap Insignia) and found Picture, Advanced Settings, Overscan and changed it from On to Off and that seems to have solved it.

I've had my LG 32" 4K UHD monitor for almost two years now, and I've always had the black frame making my realized display much smaller. When I restart my computer, the login display fills the screen properly, but once logged in, it would go back to the border. When I updated Big Sur to 11.2.2 all of a sudden it logged in and filled my display... then when I unplugged the laptop from the adapter to take with me - once plugged back in - the black border returned. Long story short..

I called Apple Support and went through some steps with upper level support - eventually rebooting into Safe Mode (holding shift upon startup) made the display full, and upon restart into normal mode, it maintained the full display. I even unplugged the display and back in - perfect. YESSSS after years. Hope this may help someone else!

Try setting the tv/monitor to show “full pixel”, if available. Most newer TVs/monitors have this adjustment buried under video settings.

Just out of curiosity, go to the apple menu and select “About this Mac” and click on the display tab. Does this information match your display? Mine does not. It is listing a 73.5” Sony HD tv - my set is an older 52” Sony HD tv.

In any case, I did not have this issue with my older (2014) Mac-mini running Big Sur attached via HDMI to a Receiver with video output to the above referenced HD tv. I did occasionally have to set overscan, but only after major updates to MacOS.

I’d also like to mention that my mouse preferences aren’t being saved (tracking). In fact, I sometimes lose the setting in the middle of performing an operation.

Thanks for responding, but the issue persists. In my attempt to ascertain the issue I've discovered that the operating system (Big Sur) is using a driver for a much larger display (Sony) 73.5" as opposed to 52". Hopefully, the developers at Apple will get this fixed. I didn't have this issue using Big Sur on an older Mac mini (2014). This SS shows the information found in "About This Mac".

Hello,

Thank You for responding to the other user. I'am still having this issue on Version 11.0.1 of Big Sur. I have tried disabling the auto-hide menu and changing all the the aspect ratios. Nothing helped. Im using a Sony Vizio 32" TV as my display. What is interesting is sometimes it appears as it should but 90-95% of the time it does not.

How can I enroll in this "Public Beta" ? A link would be extremely helpful to me.

Thank you soo much.
