unexpected shutdown after external HD disconnect

I own a 2019 MacBook Air and installed Big Sur soon after it was release a week or so ago. Since then, I've been noticing computer unexpectedly shutting down after I eject and disconnect my external backup hard drive. It is a USB external HD, which I connect via USB to USB-C adapter. I can access data on it and back up to it just fine. The only time this issue happens is when I disconnect the HD and close the lid. When I open it up to use it again, I find it shut down. Then I restart it and get the prompt stating the shutdown was unexpected and asking me if I want to report the incident to Apple. I usually do so. Any ideas, suggestions or recommendations?

Hello Michel Willard1,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! We see you're having an issue with your MacBook Air shutting down unexpectedly after disconnecting your external drive and closing the lid. We'd like to do what we can to help.

To get started, this article has troubleshooting steps for software and hardware for unexpected shut downs:

If your Mac restarted because of a problem

If you're still having issues, it may help to isolate further. In other words, if you shut the lid while the external drive is still connected, same issue?

How about disconnecting the external drive, but not closing the lid?

Take care!
