bye book not working

I created a book in photos on my iMac but when I try to "buy book" I get a message that the store is currently down for updates and will be back shortly. But I've tried several times and keep getting the same message.

Why? Is it something on my end?

What print vendor are you trying to use? Apple got out of the book printing business two years ago.

If you have a new enough version of the operating system, you can download photo printing extensions from several print vendors, including some of the ones that subcontracted Apple's printing.

Something must have gone wrong, when you upgraded from iPhoto to Photos. All albums should have been transferred just as they have been. Only the iPhoto Events have been replaced by the Moments and Collections, which grouped the photos automatically bey the capture date and location.

When you upgrade to a newer version of Photos you will see that the upgrades added some improvements -

  • in newer versions it is easier to sort the photos in the albums automatically, you can add locations.
  • The upgrade to Photos 2 on Sierra changed the way Photos is handling named faces.
  • When you upgrade to Photos 4 on Mojave, you can no longer create Apple Photo Books at all. The tool to create books has completely vanished and you can only use the third-party photo editing extensions to create print projects.
  • Photos 5 does no longer have the "Moments". They have been replaced by the Days - a curated look of tiled and cropped photos.

If you already have finished a book and want to print it, you could save the book as a PDF file and order it from Mimeo or presto Photos. See: Ordering Books and Calendars on a Mac that cannot be upgraded past El Capitan

Thank you. Question. At the time I purchased my current Mac I had a vast library of carefully organized photo albums. That was in IPhotos. Transferring to Photos completely disassembled all my work. It was as if a chronologically categorized box of photos was shaken and dumped into a pile. I was horrified. I have been reluctant to upgrade my operating system fearing that will happen again. I currently have OSX Yosemite 10.10.5. Will upgrading rearrange all my photos again?

Are you using iPhoto still or the newer Photos? If iPhoto and you can save the book as a PDF file you can order from one of two vendors as follows:

Try holding down the Option key and click on the Buy Book button.  That will give you a PDF file that is the same as was uploaded to Apple when they were still offering print services.

If so there's a 3rd party book provider which used to do the printing for Apple as a sub-contractor, Mimeo, that will take PDF files created by iPhoto and Photos and print and bind books and calendars.

Also you can upload the PDF file to PrestoPhotos which can also print and bind books and calendars from iPhoto or Photos pdf files.  They've been doing it for some time now.

Use the PrestoPhotos or Mimeo links above for direct access to the PDF file uploading and book/calendar ordering page for each site.
