iTunes/Apple Music plays different song than selected

75% of the time when I double-click, highlight and press 'enter', or any other normal way that I would select a song and play it from the iTunes app, it will not play the song I've selected and will play a completely random one (regardless if the song is checked or unchecked, if the playlist is off or on shuffle, or if I am playing from a playlist or the general 'songs' list).


Much more often than not, it will play a random song I did not select. Sometimes I will have to press 'enter' or double-click the song up to 5 times before the actual song I want will play.


I am using a new iMac but have not updated to Big Sur yet. I don't know if this update addresses this problem.


I have seen this question posted a few times but I am experiencing this problem from a desktop computer rather than a phone and there hasn't been a proper answer to help. I do not experience this problem at all on my iPhone and am logged into my Apple ID on both. I have signed out and in again on my computer and it does not fix the problem. Thank you for your help!

You've done some great troubleshooting steps to try to resolve this issue. Next, we'd like to have you start your Mac in safe mode and test to see if the issue remains. If the issue remains in safe mode, create a new user on your Mac and test to see if the issue remains.
