I have a similar problem with my MacBook Air 2020. If I use screen saver or put it in sleep mode it won't wake up. Sometimes when I put my finger on the finger ID button the login screen will briefly flash up but then back to a black screen. Only way to wake it is to force a shut down and restart.

Are you still having the issue? I am still
M1 Mac Mini. Wireless keyboard. I usually put the machine to sleep by pushing "EJECT" while holding OPTION-COMMAND. Most of the time the system wakes up, but occasionally does not respond. When I first hit RETURN to wake the system, the keyboard does issue the bluetooth signal, as evidenced by the green light, but the screen remains dark.
I've had the mini for over a month. The problem has surfaced only three times, but, if I'm not mistaken, only since the software upgrade to 11.1
Not sure. If you take a flashlight when the issue occurs and shine it on your screen, you can see your desktop faintly. So for some reason when you open the lid, the command to turn on the screen brightness to it's previous level is not going through, it just stays really dim.
I am not taking the warranty approach yet, I'm pretty confident it will be addressed in a future update. It seems like it's a software issue and not a hardware issue. Yes it's inconvenient not to have the wake function working properly, but as of now it's easy enough to get the screen back on. I think enough people are reporting it that it has caught Apple's attention.
No, it's not an external monitor but rather a SSD external disk connected to my Macbook Pro by a TB3 cable. Before I changed the original vendor's cable, the system often hung whenever the internal screen gets dark.
I have the same issue, I have noticed that this happens mostly if the machine goes to sleep with anything plugged in it causes this.
Was really hoping to get a fix for this. I am running 11.2.3
I am wondering if there is some issue with the Dock I have or something.
Just upgraded to 11.3 and did some smoking test with the original TB cable which caused system deadlock in 11.2. The sleep issue seems gone, the system can even awake with TB SSD disk mounted on desktop. This version looks like much better than 11.2.
After trying all the suggestions listed here, I had to mail in my M1 macbook pro for repair. It arrives back within a few days. When I contacted Apple, they mentioned that they needed to replace the main logic board, so hopefully the issue is now resolved.
Macbook Air M1 - have just updated to 11.4 & the not waking from sleep issue persists. Sometimes double clicking the escape button works, but sometimes it doesn't. Have to shut the lid & re-open it to get the screen to come on.
Fair enough. I just reported the bug here and hopefully others can do the same
I have this same problem. Did you figure it out?
I found that I just needed to be patient. Open the lid and wait about 15 seconds for the log ion screen to come up.
Please be aware that MacOS 11.2 has been released, and the software update is recommended to make sure this is not already fixed in the new version.
I’ve updated to 11.2 and still have the problem
