iPhone 12 Pro and Bluetooth Connectivity.

Does anyone have Bluetooth issues using an iPhone 12 Pro with 2007 - 2009 Chevrolet entertainment systems? I have a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado and I am having issues with Bluetooth calling.

I am able to pair the phone without any problems, but when it comes to using it, the radio is not able to keep the bluetooth connection resulting with the radio and phone switching back and forth between connecting to the vehicle and reverting back to the handset speaker over and over again. A complete fail.

I’ve worked directly through Apple Support to troubleshoot the issue (literally hours worth) with no success. I went through the trouble of returning my first 12 Pro and replacing it with another 12 Pro with the same issue. I took the vehicle to my local Chevy Dealership without success as well. They updated the firmware at the cost of 1 hour labor. (Ouch!) It would have been worth it for me had it worked, but it didn’t.

My previous phone (a iPhone XS) worked without a hitch. I questioning Apple support, I asked what versions of Bluetooth did the XS have vs the 12Pro, turns out they use the same version of Bluetooth. This makes me believe it is some hardware issue with the 12Pro design that has caused the issue.

This is my final attempt to resolve the problem before moving to an after market radio to be able to use the new phone in a handsfree environment. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions before I pull the trigger on a replacement radio?

This by far has been the biggest headache time wise and expense wise I’ve ever had with an Apple device. Any help is appreciated. TIA

I was disappointed that Apple did not shed any light on this issue. If there is a hardware related issue they should have researched it and informed their support team. IF that is the problem, so be it, just give us an answer. I literally spent money I didn’t need to spend at the car dealership to get the Bluetooth in my vehicle updated along with the hours tying up Apple’s support team trying to troubleshoot the problem. Apple’s support team does a terrific job IMHO. They are the face of Apple and get the brunt of unhappy customers frustration. The team that supports them need to be made aware of that.

Sorry about the rant.

I replaced the factory radio with one compatible with CarPlay, I couldn’t be happier. I saved on the labor cost by installing it myself. I purchased through Crutchfield, another company with a great support system.

I have the same exact problem with my 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 ! New iPhone 12 mini will hook up to Bluetooth and keep switching back and forth annoying .. can leave Bluetooth hooked up and if someone calls me it will answer fine . Rest Bluetooth number of times and same thing . New phone same issue it’s definitely a software issue .. Bluetooth hooks up fine to all my other vehicles just not the 2009 GMC Sierra .. wish they could just fix the issue with a software update

The problem appears to be related primarily to GM vehicles and iPhone 12. The service manager at my Chevrolet dealership put it simply. "The old technology does not work with the new technology." As luck would have it, I have a GM.

I got tired of banging my head against the wall going back and forth between GM and Apple.

My fix was installing an aftermarket radio (JVC.) I'm real happy now having CarPlay and Navigation (Waze or Apple Maps) on bigger display instead of the phone screen. This tech was not an option In my 2009 Silverado factory radio.

I'm just curious if any make vehicle other than GM are affected.

This morning, 09/21/21, I downloaded the new iOS 15 push. Lo and behold, my iPhone 12mini now works perfectly in my 2009 Chevrolet Silverado pick up. This, after countless hours on the phone with Apple tech support, two letters to Tim Cook asking, no...begging for help, several conversations with Apple administrative staff, with the final recommendation from the genius Apple engineering staff to visit my Chevrolet dealer for a firmware update...as if, somehow, Chevrolet should be responsible for Apple's software/firmware compatibility with older generation vehicles. At one point they (Apple support) were suggesting that I purchase a new truck! Unbelievable. I'm beginning to think that maybe Apple is not a happy home. I use to be a total Apple fanboy, but now...I'm not so sure.

I went through the same drill with the exception of “we’re working on it.” The writing was on the wall for me when the Chevy (dealership) service manager stated the new technology does not work with the old technology. I would not hold my breath on a fix from either company. From Apple’s point of view the problem only affects GM vehicles (older models) and GM looks at it in much the same way, it only affects the older out of warranty vehicles. That’s simply my take on it. I’m much happier with the aftermarket radio now that I now have ApplePlay as well as a backup camera and display in my 2009 Silverado.

I’ve been having the same issue on my 2009 GMC Sierra: Bluetooth on iPhone 13 (acquired Nov 2021) and/or its software has been failing to connect or disconnecting almost every attempt.. It had worked flawlessly with SE and prior iPhones since the truck was new. I have tried every possible fix I could find suggested on this and other discussions and per call with apple tech support which was well handled by the technician who acknowledged apple engineering is recording the cases and working on the problem but had no determination as to it being hardware or software. One settings combination that has better success is to have speaker routing in accessibility>touch>call routing set to Speaker and in the device type of the paired vehicle to also be set on speaker. Unfortunately this will route all calls even when not connected to your vehicle to come through on the speaker and your voice to text will also be unavailable whenever you are connected to your vehicle. And it does not guarantee that it will automatically send a call to your vehicle forcing you to toggle the speaker button to Bluetooth which essentially notifies hands-free operation. Further at the end of the call, if it connects, the Bluetooth will disconnect so then you have to wait for it to reconnect in order to make a call. I have verified this is consistent when pairing A different iPhone 13. I await an iPhone SE 2020.

I agree with you 100%. Since this Bluetooth issue appears to occur with GM vehicles in a specific time frame, I recommend contacting GM first. I’ve found them to be responsive in the past. Here is the link: https://my.gm.com/contact?evar18=gm_com_contact_us. You can call or write. I would write as this creates a document that can not be ignored and not subject to he said, she said. Be courteous and outline the problem as you are experiencing it. Ask if they are aware of the problem and if so, when can you expect a fix. Ask why you cannot get a definitive answer from the dealership. When they do respond, Please share their response here with the Apple community. As far as announcing known compatibility problems, that should be APPLE’S responsibility as the problem appears to have started with the iPhone 12. If more folks having the connectivity problem write and document the issue, I believe we can get the wheels of the machine to move.

I have the same problem with my 2009 Silverado. After the iOS 14.3 update I could receive calls on my Bluetooth but I cannot make calls. It keeps connecting and disconnecting. Prior to this iOS update it would not work at all.

The phone works fine in my wife’s vehicle.

Another annoying thing is when it connects to bluetooth it turns the volume down. So, when I’m disconnected if I forgot to turn the volume back up I’ll miss calls and texts. It’s very irritating because this phone is used for business.

Just called my Gm dealer in Peterborough On. He explained to me that it’s due to the Bluetooth version difference. He suggested connecting the iPhone to the USB port using the cable. This will keep the Bluetooth connection open.

while its not cordless, it’s better than having dropped calls. Why couldn’t apple tell me that ??

Try deleting the entire contents of your iPhone, then set your iPhone up as a new phone. Before adding any third-party apps or files, i.e. MP3 files, photos, etc., pair your phone to your vehicle and see if it works. My experience has been that in this configuration, the phone should work fine, without MP3 files in particular. Good luck. Don’t forget to back up your phone first, just in case.

Apple has no intention of fixing this. Been back and forth with the engineering department on this and they keep telling me my truck isn’t compatible with their phone. They got a tick ***** when I told them that it was their phone that was made incompatible with our vehicles. Every other iPhone I’ve had has worked fine until we got our 12’s last year. After going back and forth with them they said they’d send me some AirPods so I could call while driving. I told them these are more of a distraction than using my phone on speaker. I guess that’s the end of it. Quite possibly my last iPhone I’ll buy. They used to care about the customer but not so much anymore. Thanks Apple.

I agree that I believe it to be a hardware issue more than software. The recent iOS update, iOS 14.4, did seem help, but did NOT rectify the issue 100%. It now will generally work with phone calls, but as soon as you elect text to speech in iMessage OR Siri, same issues persist - connect, disconnect, connect disconnect.....

I believe that there is a hardware issue and Apple is trying to resolve it through software instead of replacing everyone's iPhone 12 mini (or iPhone 12 with bluetooth issues). If you search the internet you will see articles regarding a delay of deployment for the iPhone 12 due to the bluetooth chipset.

This is not the way of Steve Jobs - "it just has to work." Apple, go back to your grassroots - and remember the user experience and "it just has to work" mentality prior to shipping out hardware/software. I'm begging you, PLEASE don't turn into the Microsoft model.

We just upgraded from iPhone 6S to 12 Pro. My 2016 Kia has no issues with pairing the new phone and calls are clear with no issues. Our 2010 Chevy Silverado, however is a nightmare with call dropping issues. The phone pairs, sort of, but contacts and Siri won’t work. Calls are dropped/cut out after a word or two. We’ve paired/unpaired, turned off/on, multiple times. Judging from the responses here, it may be a firmware problem with the GM electronics. I’m reporting the issue to our Chevy dealer and Apple. Hoping for a solution soon!
