iPhone 12 Pro and Bluetooth Connectivity.

Does anyone have Bluetooth issues using an iPhone 12 Pro with 2007 - 2009 Chevrolet entertainment systems? I have a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado and I am having issues with Bluetooth calling.

I am able to pair the phone without any problems, but when it comes to using it, the radio is not able to keep the bluetooth connection resulting with the radio and phone switching back and forth between connecting to the vehicle and reverting back to the handset speaker over and over again. A complete fail.

I’ve worked directly through Apple Support to troubleshoot the issue (literally hours worth) with no success. I went through the trouble of returning my first 12 Pro and replacing it with another 12 Pro with the same issue. I took the vehicle to my local Chevy Dealership without success as well. They updated the firmware at the cost of 1 hour labor. (Ouch!) It would have been worth it for me had it worked, but it didn’t.

My previous phone (a iPhone XS) worked without a hitch. I questioning Apple support, I asked what versions of Bluetooth did the XS have vs the 12Pro, turns out they use the same version of Bluetooth. This makes me believe it is some hardware issue with the 12Pro design that has caused the issue.

This is my final attempt to resolve the problem before moving to an after market radio to be able to use the new phone in a handsfree environment. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions before I pull the trigger on a replacement radio?

This by far has been the biggest headache time wise and expense wise I’ve ever had with an Apple device. Any help is appreciated. TIA

I was disappointed that Apple did not shed any light on this issue. If there is a hardware related issue they should have researched it and informed their support team. IF that is the problem, so be it, just give us an answer. I literally spent money I didn’t need to spend at the car dealership to get the Bluetooth in my vehicle updated along with the hours tying up Apple’s support team trying to troubleshoot the problem. Apple’s support team does a terrific job IMHO. They are the face of Apple and get the brunt of unhappy customers frustration. The team that supports them need to be made aware of that.

Sorry about the rant.

I replaced the factory radio with one compatible with CarPlay, I couldn’t be happier. I saved on the labor cost by installing it myself. I purchased through Crutchfield, another company with a great support system.

I have the same exact problem with my 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 ! New iPhone 12 mini will hook up to Bluetooth and keep switching back and forth annoying .. can leave Bluetooth hooked up and if someone calls me it will answer fine . Rest Bluetooth number of times and same thing . New phone same issue it’s definitely a software issue .. Bluetooth hooks up fine to all my other vehicles just not the 2009 GMC Sierra .. wish they could just fix the issue with a software update

Doesn’t sound like they really care at Apple to address the issue they make it sound like we’re doing something wrong when it’s on there end ! Installing a nice aftermarket radio sounds like it’s the route to take need hands free while driving and getting frustrated more every day with Apple support doesn’t help .. it’s literally a waste of time going round and round and getting no where .

Have the same issue with the GM bluetooth and iphone 12. Spent way too many hours chasing this issue and must have contacted 6 different GM dealers in my area in the past few days. Some via email to the service manger and others by phone speaking to a service advisor. None of the emails to the service managers was ever returned. Some VM left for the service advisor were never return. One GM advisor did confirm there were no GM service bulletins about this issue and claimed to not have heard any complaints from customers. Did offer me the option to bring the vehicle in to their dealership and they'd troubleshoot the issue with GM enginners at the cost of $132/hr. Only one GM advisor that I spoke with today confirmed there is an issue but claimed to know of no resolution. Would you share the name and location of your GM service dealer that indicated GM is aware and working on a firmware update, (assume to the VCIM) as I'd like to be able to direct my local dealer to them for guidance? Just amazing to me how GM and their dealers are so out of touch! I have another vehicle with OEM bluetooth which is a few years older than my GM and the iphone 12 works as designed so far.

Same thing with my 2010 Camaro and iPhone 12. Almost seems random as to of it wants to connect to the cars BLUETOOTH system. I know it’s not my car, as I’ve tried with a 2nd iPhone 12. Called Apple and no real resolve. Almost as if it’s not a problem. I even called GM ONSTAR but no resolve their either. I’ve used 5, SE’s, 6 plus and 7 in the past and no issues.

I’m having same issues with my 12 max. Sometimes I can get one call to work but another call no dice. I’ve even deleted all other phone pairings and reconnected several times. Nothing seems to help. In my other vehicle I have an alpine unit and it woks flawless. I’m thinking the problem might be in that these older gm vehicles you can’t play music through Bluetooth.

Wondering if anyone had any success with the latest IOS release 14.6 with regard to their bluetooth issues. I was hopeful after reading the release notes for 14.6 (see below) that there was mention of a bluetooth fix however after downloading 14.6 there was no improvement for me.

  • This release also fixes the following issues:
  • Bluetooth devices could sometimes disconnect or send audio to a different device during an active call

Same issue with my 2009 Silverado. Upgraded to Iphone 12 max pro, I can no longer use Bluetooth in my truck. Worked great on my iphone 8. Not so much now. The phone doesn't find the bluetooth even when it says connected. On chance I can place a call, it cuts out. I switch to the iphone speaker then after a couple seconds it wants to go to bluetooth but there is no connectivity. It's a mess.

Same. 2010 GMC Sierra for work. New iPhone 12 mini. My iPhone X worked great, but no longer have it. I bought a cheap android phone and use that when I am at work.

Went through the Apple help process and was told it was probably my truck's fault. When I mentioned this thread, they said "you can find support for any idea on the internet". What a dummy.

This is like have a kid who is an Honors student, but he can't tie his shoes.... must be the shoe's fault.

Apple replaced my iphone 12 and just with the factory setting the bluetooth didn't work. No apps, no music, nothing. Just turned on bluetooth and paired. Another family member has a XR running the same bluetooth version, same IOS and has music files galore and the bluetooth works flawlessly. In my opinion Apple knows the issue and either doesn't want to address or is unable to without opening pandora's box. I've scrolled through many of the threads on Apple Support and there are solutions provided by Apple for many issues. Just strikes me oddly that not one single comment from Apple on this issue.

I have a 2009 Silverado with the same problems and my IPhone 12. My IPhone 6S was fine. It repeatedly switches between the vehicle and iPhone but won’t stay on either. I have to turn off the iPhone Bluetooth each time I use this vehicle then turn it back on after. Since Apple doesn’t have a fix I have to use the phone in hand or on its speaker.

You can’t hold GM responsible for this. No way they could have know what hardware / software apple was going to use in

the future. Apple created a phone with blue tooth issues and is skirting the issue by telling to us to go waste our time and money getting a software update at the GMC dealership. $120 and days later the problem is the same. What a crock. I’d like to hear from any one that the radio update fixed the issue.

Same issue with my 12 pro max on our 2010 Duramax. Nothing seems to work. Just spent some time on the phone with support and they act like it’s the first time they’ve heard of it. Supposedly they’re going to “escalate” it & call back next week. Doubtful if anything will come of it. I’d replace the stereo if I wasn’t going to replace the truck next year. This it BS on Apple’s part.
