self-diagnosis not working

I have been having various problems on my MacPro, like very slow opening at start-up and between apps, frozen screen, etc. The user guide tells you how to have the mac self-diagnose: after shutting down, press power then letter D. It is supposed to give you a screen to select your language. When I do that, the first screen to open says ""Installing internet recovery". I follow the instructions and after a brief wait, I get a screen that says "no issues found' and an option to quit or have them "Recover". When I hit Recover, it says "unable to start mac Recovery." Then it turns off. This has happened several times, always the same result. I don't believe I had any internet problems andI have already searched for Malware, etc. Is there another way to self-diagnose?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

MacPro is Desktop, you have posted in MacBook Pro forum.

To trouble shoot further you can:

—Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc. Login and test. Reboot as normal and test as caches get rebuilt.

In Safe mode third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled, it removes malware, etc hampering smooth operation, however a reboot will put it back to normal mode.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/Anti-Virus

if no insights or resolve you get a good look at your System config. and reveal conflicts or issues, you can download/run this trusted utility https://etrecheck.com

If you need help interpreting the report you can post it here in its entirety in the "Additional Text" box in the editing toolbar below, in your reply.

Hi Leroy - Thank your for your suggestions. I tried them and got best results from Etrecheck. Their "Major" news is that my battery and hard drive are at the end of their natural lives. I suspected this but thought I might get a few months from them. I am shopping for a new (refurbished) MacPro. The "Minor" issues on Etrecheck are too numerous to mention and not worth fixing at this point, though the speed is unbelievably slow.

Thanks again,

Barbara
