In the help, I’ve lost my Apple TV remote article, it states that the code to pair the remote app on iPhone with the Apple TV will appear on the TV for entry into the phone. However, the opposite is happening for me — it’s showing on my phone a code to enter on the TV, which has no remote. How can I pair it?
You have to use the "old" appletv remote app to add a separate device. Then add new devices accordingly...

There is a difference in procedure for the older models (2nd and 3rd generation) and the newer models (4th generation or later). For the older models, you may need a remote to set it up. If you don’t want to buy a replacement remote, then maybe you can borrow one temporarily?
