Big Sur 11.1 External Display Issues!

I've installed macOS Big Sur 11.1 right after it launched today. My mistake lol

Unfortunately, I noticed my Type-C ports no longer recognize my two external monitors. I'm using HDMI to Type-C. So far my troubleshooting is as follows:

  1. PRAM reset. This seemed to help until I locked the display. Once unlocked via Touch ID, the True Tone went off and one of the two monitors went out and will no longer connect. Woot. Normally, when connecting an external display, the screen goes black then back on, however, the screen short-of lags and then doesn't ever detect an active connection.
  2. SMC reset. This actually didn't help at all... :(
  3. Fresh install, same issues.

Any suggestions?

FINALLY! VICTORY! As of the latest Big Sur update my displays are now FULLY RESPONSIVE AND WORKING FINE. YES they come online after the computer goes to sleep. YES they maintain their arrangement and resolution.

Time to crack a beer and throw some dogs on the grill because it's going to be a beautiful 4th of July weekend y'all!!

MacOS Version that fixed it for me: 11.4

Can't believe it took this long, but my displays are now operating at 100%

In case anyone's curious: I have an M1 Mac mini, connecting two displays to it: 1) a 30" Cinema Display via adapter to USB-C, and 2) a Phillips 27" display connecting via HDMI. The 30" Cinema Display was the one that was giving problems before, not connecting after my Mac went to sleep, and losing the arrangement in the settings.

Mine used to work too on 11.4 but it randomly decided to no longer work and no amount of going back to Catalina and back to 11.4 was able to fix it for me. So depressed with the situation and having to move back to Windows to develop that I cleaned the thing and it’s going on Swappa tomorrow. Maybe I’ll repurchase another in future if things are sorted out with new releases.

Still not working for me with a BenQ SW320 and a MBP 16" / 2019. I have tried using Targus and OWC docking, going direct, shifting ports, shifting from DisplayPort 1.1 to 1.4, etc. When Big Sur awakes and doesn't detect the screen the sole solution is to reboot, otherwise anything like unplugging/plugging back the screen either directly or via the docking or docking/undocking just leads to a kernel crash... Honestly I haven't had to restart so often a mac in more than decades.

Also to be noted the Bluetooth is lagging with the TrackPad, I have to use it wired with a lightning cable for it to be usable!

It feels like a bunch of stuff, performance wise are totally screwed with Big Sur but hardly understand how it could the 4th update and such issue not been resolved. Let's hope for Monterey... or the 11.5...

Nevermind. I recently posted an update saying the issue was fixed with the latest update. Nope. Premature. It's not.

My 30" Cinema Display, connected via a USB-C adapter, does not wake back up after the Mac goes to sleep (despite the power of the display still being on). My other display, a newer Phillips 27", wakes up every time. But for whatever reason it does not seem that the Mac can figure out how to detect the Cinema Display connected in the USB-C port.

What a disaster. I've given up. Can't believe Apple hasn't fixed this....

(PS I can't seem to find a way to delete my prior response on this thread. Possible?)

Same with my macbook. As for my 2010 mac pro, it wont register the external displays and is now completely out of service because it doesn't have a. built in screen. Yet, I can't get apple to help me because it's 'obsolete'. But when I boot up the same drive on my macbook i still have external display issues.

I had very similar issues but with my 7,1 and Eizo monitor. I thought it was GPU and Apple thought it was monitor. Brought it in for repair Dec 2020 and Apple saw no problems. Bluetooth issues developed in January/Feb. Monitor issues continued. Sent monitor to Eizo and they said it was the computer. I brought it in to Apple 4 times. They eventually replaced GPU and top IO board. Display and bluetooth issues went away but major performance issues developed. Trying tp process RAW images from my Canon camera halted/froze the computer. Finally they replaced motherboard and CPU. Got machine back a month ago and everything is great. It took a while to find someone at Apple who actually tried to fix it. horrible experience. Also communication with phone techs and store techs is non-existent. My Mac was out of service for 6 months it sucked.

Since November 2019 the macOS-support for my fantastic EIZO 4K-Monitor is switching on and off randomly with every update.

Since 11.4 it's broken again and my 4K-Monitor stays black regardless if connected via HDMI or USB-C.

For I have a Mac Mini, this is an absolute No Go in 2021. Thank God I didn't sell my good, old Full HD Screen.

Also lagging Bluetooth which is annoying when using my Magic Trackpad, also WLAN connection-build issues.

This is all sub standard and feels like we're in the 90s.

Phone support one year ago was a comic experience.

And the engineers simply seem to not have much clue about writing clean and reliable operating system code that supports open standards.

For those who experienced display connectivity issues w/Big Sur: update to 11.5 (just available for me today) and try again. I didn't have my HDMI working through all versions of Big Sur 11.1-11.4, just updated, and now have my HDMI / Thunderbolt / USBc to HDMI, for 3 displays on my Mac mini 2018, plus the advantages of the Big Sur improved performance throughout. Still, the older your display the greater the chances that drivers have dropped out / become incompatible. I'm having no problem with LG Ultrafine 4K 23.7, an LG UL600 27", and a Samsung 4K nu6900 TV all at 60 hz.

Updated to Big Sur 11.5. It still crashes if you unplug and then plug back the external display, with a BenQ SW320. And BlueTooth is still lagging with Apple's TrackPad so keeping in a wired mode with the lightning.

I really don't get what's so wrong for Apple not to fix something like that. I mean they must get quite a lot of crash report on this one every week...

Jul 24, 2021 11:07 PM in response to pleberre

Yesterday I updated to Big Sur 11.5 on my MacBook Pro with new M1 chipset, hoping it fixes my issues I have with my external MSI MAG341CQ connected via HDMI port on an Anker USB-C PowerExpand+ 7in1 Media Hub.

Unfortunately it did not! Since Big Sur 11.1 or so, the MSI monitor operates at only 30Hz (3440x1440) and I also consider random input lags with my Logitech mouse connected via bluetooth.

I do not have those issues with the same setup when running my windows 10 laptop! I get a proper 60Hz output with the same exact resolution, also there are no mouse stutter or whatsoever.

I truly do not understand that those many complains people have are not recognized or even ignored by apple! I mean those products are really expensive stuff and apple is making a ton of money with it, so why the **** isn't this not already fixed? It is such a pain in the a** working with such a messy setup!

Please apple fix those issues, finally!

There's one things that seems to be fixed in 11.5. Before 11.5 turning-off the screen (BenQ SW320) would require a restart of my MBP to get it detected again, now it seems it is detected! At least I can turn-off the screen and use the energy saving again.

The BLE with Apple Magic TracPad is slightly better, but still unusable...

And you just don't want to unplug the screen, that still leads to a crash. So the only way to "undock" is a full shutdown.
