New M1 Mac Mini connection woes

Even with the Thunderbolt3 to 2 adapter and cable, one cannot connect connect a m1 mac mini to a mid 2011 imac with High Sierra? Seriously? If true then how does one do it? Not at all rather stinks.

No 2020 Mac will connect to an iMac in Target Display Mode.

The hardware and firmware is just no longer present.
