The update, already downloaded, cannot install. This update file may be damaged/corrupted. You need to delete the update package - and then download a fresh copy of the update.

To delete the failed update from your iPad:

Settings > General > iPad Storage

Scroll down the list of Apps until you find the Apple Update, tap, then select Delete Update.

After deleting the update, a forced-restart of the iPad is recommended:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

After restarting, you can reattempt the update:

Settings > General > Software Update

I hope this proves to be helpful in resolving the problem.

If you have access to a full computer, like a Mac or Windows PC, try either using the Finder on a Mac that has the newest macOS Catalina installed OR with an older Mac with an older Mac OS, download and install the latest iTunes version ( or latest iTunes for Windows PC ), make sure the Mac or Windows PC is connected to the Internet, connect your iPad by the USB charge cable to the computer and let the iTunes application upgrade/update your iPad model, using the iTunes Software Update feature, to the current iPadOS 14.3.

Best of Luck to You!

Thank you but coincidently I have just got it sorted. I spoke with AppleCare and it they instructed me through a correct reboot. However, once it started I had to borrow a cable connected mouse as the reboot would not recognise my mouse until it completed.

Support downloaded the update without using the App Store which they believe was the problem.

thanks for responding 👍

What iOS/iPadOS version was your iPad on prior to trying this update?

You have to realise that with the continuing pandemic , there are many more users going online and slamming Apple's servers trying to get/download/install this update so these users can try and attempt to exercise in their homes, using Apple's new Fitness+ app.

You're update issue is NOT an isolated one.

Not to mention anyone else who might have gotten new Apple devices during the winter holidays.

Apple servers are probably still being slammed every day since.

It is what it is.

I have decided to wait out this iOS/iPadOS 14.3 update until this frenzy calms down.

Whenever that happens.

Your iPad is too old for any more upgrades/updates.

Sorry.

If you need/want an iPad with an up to date iPadOS with access to current, updated apps, then you really need to seriously consider a new iPad model OR a much, MUCH “newer” and less expensive, used iPad models, from better known, trusted Apple product/device retailers/resellers, locally or online, capable of running the latest iPadOS versions.

There are plenty of newer, older iPad models that can run the latest, current versions of iPadOS.

Sorry & Best of Luck to You!

I have the same issue as the OP however most apps as well as many Settings pages will not open. They try to open for a moment and then blink away. Including the Storage page in the General setting. The only apps that open at Safari and Mail. None of the social media apps or Clock etc. etc will open.

I've tried connecting the iPad (5th gen running 14.2) to my computer (iMac 27" mid 2011). iTunes says its downloading a software update but has been running for an hour without finishing.

I've tried shutting down the iPad 3 times without success.

Every solution I try to implement will not work.

Thanks

Dave

Not everyone has a newer Mac with the ability to use the latest macOS, so the macOS Finder solution does not work for all.

And many iPad users that post here use a Windows PC, which needs the use of the latest version of iTunes.

And users of older Macs with older macOS/MacOS versions also need to use the latest version of iTunes, as well.
