Chess is stuck on the most difficult setting after Big Sur update

My Chess is stuck on the most difficult setting; moving the slider makes no difference.

The game also uses the entire computer to play; it gets warm and everything else slows down.

Perhaps playing the game against a computer looking over 250 movers ahead is interesting for a Master, but it's unusable for me.

Just a thought: Apple actually TESTS their updates AND FIXES THE BUGS before issuing the updates.

With Xi's permission, of course.

I'm going to guess since I'm not in BS at the moment, that this file is locked or corrupt...

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Chess/Data/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Chess.plist

~ tilde indicates hidden Local Library

Apple hid the Users' Library folders...

Method 1:

  1. From the Finder, select the Go menu at top of the screen, and choose Go to Folder.
  2. In the window that opens, enter ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Chess/Data/Library/Preferences, and click Go.

Same here. I can beat it easily on easiest difficulty on a Intel Mac running Catalina but not on M1 Mac running Big Sur.

M1 version of Chess also stops Apple Music playing through BT headphones. If you close the chess game but leave Chess app running and switch to another app then music resumes after a while but it's considerably lower quality compared to Apple Music without Chess running at all. I'm pretty sure Chess makes audio switch from AAC to SBC due to lack of resources.

Same problem. With the old game, I could beat it at "think ahead 3 moves" but had no chance at "think one second". So I played "think ahead 3 moves" and sometimes sandbagged in the beginning to make the game interesting.

Now with Big Sur - I have no chance no matter where the slider is set, and the computer obviously pauses and thinks a lot at like move #3 and from then on. It is useless until they update it.

I have experienced "upgrades" & "updates" from Sierra, to Mojave, Catalina and then to Big Sur. There was never any problem. So, I have developed a sort of liking to Apple... that it's a dependable & foolproof product. But, now I wonder why they are not taking cognisance of our problem. Let's keep fingers crossed.

I sincerely hope they sort out the problem with Chess game.

& BTW are you experiencing another lacuna. Earlier, if we select multiple files in a folder and click "Rename" , we could see "Rename N files?" (where N is the number of files. This feature was very handy. Now, after Bigsur 11.1, we simple see "Rename" . The number of files option is missing.

Hope, Apple takes care of all these problems.
