can I hide movies for rent or sale?

I had an Apple TV several years ago and switched to Roku because I just wanted to see the services I had subscribed to. The Apple TV really pushed content for sale or rent on iTunes and I got tired of wading through that.

Is the interface now capable of hiding stuff for sale/rent, or at least pushing it down in prominence behind what I really want to see, which is all the content I'm already subscribing to?

The Home Screen on the current models can have its icons re-arranged as you see fit. Unlike the older models, where the top row was fixed for Apple’s own “apps”. If you want your favorite five apps in the top row, then just move them to a new position.

All third party apps are user-downloadable and deletable.

The apps in the top row can have content shown in the “top shelf” banner space at the very top (or all of the background), when one of these apps is selected. This can be static and generic, or dynamic and customized to the user, or according to preference (as pre-programmed options), depending on app. If the banner space shows multiple items, then these may be directly selectable as shortcut. For some services, the use of this space is used promotionally.

E.g. the Spotify app will use it for suggested playlists.

E.g. if you have the Apple TV app, the Movies app, and the TV shows app on the second row or lower, then their Buy/Rent content will never be shown in the banner space at the top.

Thanks for responding. It's vague, I know. I remember seeing an interface with the top couple rows of items being additional-cost content, and having to scroll down to get to the icons for the services I subscribed to. Yes, it was only a couple clicks on the remote, but I just grew more and more annoyed at having my TV trying to sell me stuff when I'd already subscribed to a half dozen services with more content than I could ever watch.

The Roku allowed me to organize the home screen with just the stuff I wanted to see. Roku is doing annoying things these days too, and I'm contemplating going back to an Apple TV. But I'll stick with the Roku if I'd still have to wade through stuff I never want to see to get to the stuff I do want and already pay for.

Apple TV several years ago

Not precise enough to give an impression of what you remember seeing.

  • Subscription content often has their own app. You won’t see iTunes Store content there.
  • Subscription Channels in the Apple TV app have their own page, and the Apple TV+ Channel has its own tab now.
  • Movies for rent or sale will be present in the Movies app and the Apple TV app. There are no hiding options. The Watch Now tab in the Apple TV app will have mixed content from subscription services and the iTunes Store. That page is promotional, after all.
