MacBook Air M1 battery drain when sleeping

I recently received my new MacBook Air M1, and it is delightfully fast, and keeping cool, just as expected. I have some issues with the battery however - during use it holds up pretty well and is more or less as expected, burning 10-15% an hour doing Zoom, which would always kill my 2018 MBP I had before. However, I have heard from all reviews that it essentially shouldn't be using any battery when sleeping, mine however is seeing 15-20% drop overnight which even for my old MacBook would be a lot.

I believe it shouldn't be indexing anymore, I have had it for 4 days now.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Hi. Purchased a great new Macbook Air M1 last week. It is connected to an HP external monitor 21.5 via Lemocrete HDMI/USB splitter/hub, an HP mouse (bluetooth) and Arteck keyboard (bluetooth).

Laptop left in Sleep Mode, 100% Battery, with Wifi and Bluetooth connected but devices turned off and HDMI cable detached. Noticed dramatic 40% battery drain when re-opened 12 hours later. Is this normal?

Thx

Mine drains fast with my usb rollerball back lit mouse. I have it plugged in to an Anker external SSD... it is a little hub with memory. I eject it from my desk top, and my mouse passes through.

I spend a lot of time in bed, and my Air sits idle, screensaver short time. I might use it for maybe 30 minutes off and on over 2 hrs or so..

battery lasts longer with nothing plugged in.

I closed my computer with 40% battery remaining, nothing plugged in to it, only an internet browser open when I closed it. Reopened it to find less than 2% battery. It was fully charged at 9 am and nearly fully discharged 12 hours later. I have been a Mac customer for over 20 years and have never ahd this bad battery life from prior models, nor did I have any of them drain noticeably while the laptop was closed/asleep. Battery chart claims the computer was open/screen on/awake for its last 3 hours which it absolutely was not, it was closed and packed up fully and was not ajar upon reopening it when I got the low battery notice. Disturbing as it's less than 6 month old brand new purchase. I am obeying all of Apple's battery optimization rules to my knowledge.

I should clarify: mine dropped 40% in power while in what should have been sleep mode for 2 hours. I closed the laptop fully and completely, with only an internet browser open at the time, no external anything plugged in to it, no monitors or usb connections. 2 hours later power has dropped 40% and the battery graphs claim the computer was open, which it was not, its last 2 hours-but to drop 40% in two hours if it was open is too fast, plus, it was closed/shut properly and sleep should have activated. Brand new laptop? m1 chip? Seems subpar.

I am having this 16 to 20% drop overnight ( about 2% per Hr. )but I have had my MacBook Air M1 over a year. This problem did not exist until I installed MacOS Monterey. I always make sure my battery is fully charged before putting it to sleep and on many many occasion with Big Sur the battery was still at 100% in the morning with open applications. My assumption is Apple has something going on that they are not telling us about.

Anyone else noticed the same.

I faced similar issue with my Macbook air, which i get repaired in Delhi, India. MCB was under warranty they replaced motherboard and Fingerprint sensor after that there is not a single % down over night.

Yes. There are cases where the issue is Hardware.

There are other times (more often than not) where the issue is software (almost invariably due to third-party software).

I have noticed this with my M1 Macbook Air too. After reading this thread I tried last night disconnecting the small USB C hub I use to connect an external webcam amongst other things and hey presto no battery drain. Left in sleep all last night and this morning 100% battery remaining whereas previously in the same period the battery would have been more than 50% depleted.

Annoying that I will have to remove and reinsert the hub to stop this from happening and certainly shouldnt need to do this but for now at least I can come back after a couple of days away and find my laptop with a still charged battery !

Is the hub powered through the USB-C connection with the MacBook (so it doesn’t have a separate power source)?

Then why wouldn’t you expect the hub to drain your MacBook’s battery?
