Kobo E-readers and Big Sur?

The new Macbook Air (Big Sur) won't recognize my Kobo ereader. It is recognized by my old Macbook Air running High Sierra. Kobo's advice was to reset the reader which I did but no difference. Has anyone experienced this and hopefully found a solution?

I have two generic USB hubs of the same style by different Chinese companies and they both work for this purpose. Here's the first one I could find in my order history:

Hello 1njm,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It looks like your Kobe E-reader is not recognized by your Mac after updating to Big Sur, and we'd be happy to look into this with you.

Let’s start by resetting SMC and NVRAM. These have easy resets (you will not lose any information):

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.

I am getting a similar issue. After resetting SMC and PRAM/NVRAM my Kobo Touch is recognized. However, now when I borrow a book from my library using Adobe Digital Editions, I get an error on my Kobo that says “Your reader is not authorized to open this book”. I have tried re-authorizing the Kobo and that doesn’t fix the issue. I have tried re-authorizing the computer and that doesn’t fix the issue. I have even tried a factory reset on the Kobo and that doesn’t fix the issue.

Is there another fix for this?

Thanks

Chris

I was having this same issue when trying to connect with a USB-A to USB-C adapter (my go-to solution when I'm just using a single device). I tried everything mentioned here to no avail.

However, I just discovered that I am able to connect through a USB hub, which I frequently use anyway on account of the fact that we only have two ports. This is on a brand new 13" M1 MacBook Pro - USB hub, perfect connection every time - my Libra shows right up.

Hope that helps!

I picked up a Satechi USB hub (different model) at a local store and the Kobo now is recognized by Finder. My local computer geek said something about it being common for computers to see e-readers as old technology and not want to deal with them. Apparently the hub confuses them and the connection goes through. How is that for a highly technical problem description (mine, not his!)

Issue indeed solved by using a multi port USB-C hub with USB2 connections (and other things like HDMI, ethernet, ...) - not sure what the root cause is though.

If someone could tell more about the actual reason of the issue?

Using a simple dongle converter USB-C to USB3 does not work either.

Also having the same issue when connecting to a MacBook Pro 16" with MacOS Catalina.

Issue appears to be related to USB3/USB-C - not OS.
