Mail icon doesn't work on my MacBook Air

The mail icon doesn't work on my MacBook Air. I click on it, it opens up a new blank email and then returns to the last page I was using. No luck getting through to Apple Support.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Saxon

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

If still no good Disconnect from the Internet, then start Mail, look for the last rec'd eMail.

Does Mail crash if no internet?

Quit Mail & login to your WebMail in a Browser, if possible delete any later eMails there after the last rec'd one on the Mac.

If you have no POP accounts & they’re all IMAP accounts then in Mail’s Mailbox menu choose Rebuild.

Does using the mail.app link in the applications folder work?

How about the Launchpad icon?

How about Spotlight Search? (command - spacebar)

Your report needs a little more detail before we can start guessing possible solutions.

  1. It’s a computer... in case of any doubt, REBOOT
  2. Which model MacBook Air? Intel processor or the new Apple Silicon?
  3. Which version of MacOS?
  4. Has Mail ever worked, or is this a new setup?
  5. If it has worked in the past, on the same email setup or is this a new email account?
  6. If it has worked in the past, what did you change recently?
  7. Does the New email disappear of its own accord, or only when you do something like click or start typing?

Any other clues for what is going wrong will be useful, just report what you see with your eyes and do with your fingers...

Thanks Branta. Here's my answers

  1. It's a laptop, MacBook Air. I've already shut down and it made no difference
  2. Intel processor (more info below)
  3. OS X El Capitan (more info below)
  4. Yes Mail previously worked
  5. Same email set up
  6. I haven't changed anything recently
  7. Yes it disappears after 3-4 seconds

I notice you posted a screen grab including the device serial number. Not a fatal mistake, but some believe the info can be abused. I’ll ask our moderators to lose the picture just in case.

Noting before it disappears, OS X v10.11.6

13” MBA, early 2013. 4GB memory. Intel graphics

Let us know how you get on with the suggestions so far. There is another rather more complex suggestion surfaced in the back room, but I think try the easy things first.
