Fitness+ won’t use screen mirroring
Why do the workouts not show through screen mirroring or lightning to HDMI cable? The preview video works but when I start the actual workout I only get sound through the tv.

You need the Apple TV. You can’t mirror. Start the Fitness+ app, and when you get to the video after you select you workout (before hitting Play) in the lower right is the Displays icon, and you can choose the Apple TV to display it. Make sure your Apple TV is up to the latest version.
Wow, what a HUGE disappointment! Just like another person who replied, my wife & I both have apple watches (v.6) and just subscribed to fitness+ over the weekend. We spent some time going through all the workouts yesterday and were looking forward to this (Monday) morning's workout. And then found out it wouldn't play through our TV with lightning to HDMI!! I thought something was wrong with the cable or something.
EVERY other exercise video we've used, EVERY SINGLE ONE, works with lightning to HDMI. Why is Apple disabling this? Between my wife, me and our 2 kids, we own 4 MacBooks, 4 iPhones, 2 watches, 5 iPads, 4 AirPods pro and various other products, and I am a 15 year+ Apple stockholder. I ask Apple to fix this right away.
Apple: you ruined my morning workout. Although I returned to Nike so I could see it on my TV, I was so mad that I'm more stresses after the workout than before.
I will also report this directly to Apple.
Yeah. recently, I contacted Apple and their response to this was “I believe this issue is already under investigation and our engineers are working it”.
I reckon the reason is that Apple is trying to mislead users WHO HAVE PAID COLD HARD CASH for their product, yet we can’t cast to third party products, e.g. Chromecast, Samsung TV, LG webOS. It’s just ridiculous!!! We paid, so let us use out money to do what we want with what we’ve paid for! I’ve only got an Apple Watch and an iPhone, no iPad, and Apple gives no consideration to people like me! We paid. Give us what we paid for, properly.
Apple is practically destroying their own reputation by doing this... 😂
I understand your frustration but Apple clearly indicated what devices were supported and never said mirroring was an option. There are plenty of paid video apps that don’t allow mirroring either. If Fitness+ doesn’t suit your needs then don’t pay for it.
If I look at what I've purchased from Apple over the years, I'd probably be a fanboy - two Apple TVs - older models, half a dozen ipads, a couple mac book airs, half a dozen iphones, apple watch S6. Easily 15K. I have a trial of Fitness+ - I like it - but this one is a DEAL BREAKER - I think your are just being piggish to need to buy a new Apple TV to use this app on a big screen. I will go back to other apps that I can mirror. This restriction is the last straw. Great app but not without the capability to mirror.
I’m joining this club.
Maddening and frustrating. Plus the sellers of cables on Amazon UK at least, don’t seem to know this restriction. They warn about not being able to use Netflix etc. So I purchased thinking it would be fine.
Apple is crazy to think users will buy an Apple TV (I already have one but not in the room I’m using for Apple Fitness+ in lockdown UK) or use an iPhone screen.
I know Apple don’t bother looking at this forum but I’ll write it anyway...
...get this sorted Apple. Craziness.
Came here with the same issue. It’s not even just an issue with new TV’s that have AirPlay integrated, but also older Apple TV’s.
I just started the Fitness+ trial and dug out my old 2nd gen Apple TV, solely for mirroring to my bedroom TV, and have the same issue. TL;DR, that TV is like a 2008 Dynex that rarely gets used, and I have a brand new Bravia in my living room that gives me everything an Apple TV would. Zero need for a new Apple TV in my life and not getting forced into one, guess I’m out on this service on day one /shrug.
I have a ROKU TV and a “Mirror to ROKU” App o my iPhone so i do not use any plug ins at all and everything on my iPhone mirrors onto my TV except the apple fitness, very frustrating. It even does the count down to start fitness then goes bklank! So i know it can mirror, apple is just not letting it and that is very frustrating. I will most likely be canceling my apple fitness soon and finding another fitness program that mirrors to the TV.
I’m not surprised by that at all. Apple has always at some point limited content of their own that could be mirrored (again...at the very beginning you couldn’t do much of anything with AppleTV+ on most TVs using any method that worked for anything else). Completely get the frustration so if using a different plug in then what you already use isn’t something you want to do by all means look for a service that gives you what you want with the convenience that you want. For those that love everything about the Fitness+ app EXCEPT for the current inability to have it display on their TVs without investing in an AppleTV unit my work around may be helpful until an update or change happens on Apple's end. I’m honestly indifferent about the app. I’m using it solely because I got 6 months free from Best Buy when I upgraded my watch to the series 6 one but the likelihood of me keeping it beyond that is slim. If I were to keep it I would be fine using my work around to get to the end result since it’s not something that takes me more than a few seconds to plug in and it’s a easy way to do it when I travel since I doubt there are too many TVs in any hotel I would stay in that doesn’t have an hdmi port. Not everyone would be ok with that so I get it. I suspect at some point it will get to the point that it’s as simple as a wireless cast/mirror but we’ll see
It doesn’t just tried to today, so if I get this right Apple Watch latest really check latest iPhone check roughly £1600 and you can’t use the fitness app which is also £10 a month on a tele just on a tiny screen on my phone. What a joke so now I need a 4K Apple TV box
I also caved and bought an Apple TV this weekend. Our television setup doesn’t warrant needing one so I had to convince my husband that it was a fitness device rather than a media streamer. It took a lot of convincing but he was able to find someone selling one for a reasonable price.
This thread is for submitting feedback, no? It's just passing the buck here. This is a glaring deficiency baked in intentionally by Apple that Apple needs to fix. Most of the users here have multiple Apple products and services. Asking for simple mirroring to any television is perfectly reasonable. The Peloton app, btw, mirrors just fine to any television display on Wifi.
I’m guessing that Apple is trying to protect the content. Mirroring is not secure. Just a guess.
Apple doesn't monitor here. The only way to let them know about what you'd like to see in the future is to send feedback here - Product Feedback - Apple

Does anyone know if the iOS 14.4 update that just released fixed this issue?
Apple has given no indiction that they intend to change this.
Can anyone explain if there’s a technical reason why iPhone can’t currently have it’s screen mirrored to a TV either by means of AirPlay or the lightning to HDMI adapter specifically for a Fitness+ workout?
