Running latest Mohave on i7 iMac. Get Info of root System folder says 9.99GB. But Get Info of hard disk shows 428 GB of System files, leaving me with very little space on the hard drive. How can that be? Any ideas what to do about it?

Discovered that Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) was generating Snapshots that amounted to close to 100 GB within "Systems". Have gotten rid of those, but a large discrepancy still remains. I am posting a screen capture in case there is anyone out there with ideas. Thanks! Eddie

Mac OS uses local little space. You have something else going on . Please post an EtreCheck report of your system and we can look for obvious issues.
Well, I got rid of the malware and see the same problem in Safe Mode and upon reboot. So keeping this thread alive in case anyone else has an idea why System files are taking up so much space. Thanks! Eddie

Your report came through just fine. Somehow you have disconnected Apple's internal security protection, this is NOT okay and you need to get it turned back on. Please call AppleCare ASAP to get this done, if you don't know the number please use: AppleCare Contact Info
One main problem is adware has been installed on the computer, please download the free version of Malwarebytes.com and use it. Then restart the computer in Safe Mode and then restart normally and test.

Thanks so much for your advice. Using EtreCheck, I saw a problem with System Integrity Protection. It was disabled. I have since re-enabled it. Is this the same thing as the internal security protection that you mentioned?
I will get moving on Malwarebytes!

System taking up too much hard disk space
