Can't control Macs Fan Control.

My Macs Fan Control is showing speeds ranging from 0 to 16000 rpm and constantly jumping all over. I've shut down the app and reopened with no change. I've changed presets with no change. I've reset the SMC with no change. I'm afraid that this will damage my fan. I just now set it to "full blast" and it has settled on 5500 rpm. Anty other setting and it reverts to jumping around again. Any thoughts?

Mac mini, macOS 10.15

Arg.. how many fan controls have you installed?

In addition to Mac Fan Control.

You also have TG Pro from Tunabelly installed and loaded on your system.

[Loaded] com.tunabellysoftware.TGFanHelper.plist (Tunabelly Software Inc. - installed 2020-11-19)

https://www.tunabellysoftware.com

Plus some remnants of HDD Fan Control left over from early this year.

HDD Fan Control (? - installed 2020-03-24)

Perhaps you accidentally damaged something or left a cable disconnected or a cable is not completely seated (one near the power supply connector which sits at the edge of the Logic Board is easy to miss and easy to damage or not seat correctly.

I agree the temps looks good.

Maybe try deleting the Macs Fan Control .plist preference files as maybe it is corrupt.

Also try a PRAM reset (hold the PRAM reset for at least three chime so it activates several times) and try the Apple Diagnostics again. For a 2010+ Mini you should be able to boot the diagnostics by pressing Option + D if macOS 10.12.6+ has been installed at some point on the Mini (sometimes just holding the "D" key will also work).

If you Option Boot the Mini and let it sit at the Apple Boot Picker menu does the fan run at high speed?

Have you tried reinstalling macOS over top of itself? Or performing a clean install (perhaps even to an external USB drive so you don't have to restore everything if it is not necessary)?

Also which exact model is this and what OS are you running?

Macs Fan Control was the answer back then and has worked faithfully ever since until a few days ago. Since my last comment, the auto preset has gone wild also. Right it is running stable at constant 2000 rpm. I will continue to play with it, and do the diagnostics tomorrow.

Hmm... what happens when you completely remove Mac Fan Control from the Mac Mini?

  1. Go to > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items remove MacFanControl.
  2. Quit Mac Fan Control from the dropdown menu.
  3. Delete it from your Applications folder.
  4. Empty the Trash.

Is Mac Fan Control the only monitoring and control utility that you are using?

(sometimes we can forget that we also installed other control utilities)

Think real hard, what other monitoring/control utility did you install? Some are harder to remove than Mac Fan Control.

FWIW I was trying to get you to uninstall Mac Fan Control and test the Mac Mini without Mac Fan Control to see how it responded.

No Mac Cleaner is considered junk-ware by many here and will likely just cause more problems for you.

I was thinking along those same lines. Except that it looks like DdSwift's Mac Fan Control is showing good temp. readouts across the board, including what looks like a 1T Crucial MX500 SSD.

I say that because they all look good when I compare them to my readouts, including my 960GB PNY SSD.

With that in mind, I think that we would see a funky temp. reading if there was a disconnected or damaged temp. sensor.

Good morning to all. I tried running diagnostics a few times, based on Apple's procedure, but all I got was a dark screen. I then unplugged the mini for a few minutes, rebooted and macs fan control is still uncontrollable. I exited the app and can still hear the fan speeding up. Reopened the macs fan app and it is still all over the place. Obviously the macs fan control is not in control.

I visited macs fan control website and couldn't find anything about my problem. Am I the only one who has experienced this?

I really appreciate all of the suggestions and hope that they will continue.

This is my system:

I quit and uninstalled the macs fan app. Reinstalled it and no change. I installed another temp monitoring app a few days ago and so I thought that this might also be affecting macs fan control. I uninstalled it but also no change. Or maybe the other app left some garbage behind. Would a mac cleaner app be appropriate? I'm nothing close to being a computer whiz so many of your suggestions are a little over my head.

Happy belated New Year guys!

Update on my fan control....still the same. The only preset that works is "full blast". I've tried contacting the support page of Macs Fan Control with no success.

I kind of recall that when I installed TG Pro a couple of months ago it reacted the same. I've eliminated all the remnants that I could find of previous applications. My hearing isn't all that great so I don't hear the fan running at 5500 rpm. Worst case I'll just leave it on full blast and hopefully it will last a few years.

I want to thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions.
