Can't hear received calls on iPhone 12 Pro Max

Hi, I recently upgraded to 14.3 on my iPhone 12 max, when receiving calls I can’t hear the caller at all via the ear speaker or if you press the speaker button. If I hang up and ring them back there are no issues. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have tried the following and one of them solved the problem - for the last 2 weeks it is working fine:

  1. Reset network settings (this did not help by its own - temporary solution)
  2. Remove all BT devices and add again when needed
  3. Turnoff VoLTE

I do not have 5G in my region yet. Therefore I do not see the option all together. The reason I am writing this is because some as written that this happens when 5G is turned on, but seems like it was not the case for me.

This is for sure either a GSM radio issue or an OS issue. Hopefully it is the latter and Apple pushes a patch for it.

I got my iphone 12 pro max last week. At first I used it without upgrading the software (os 13). The morning after i started using it, there was no audio on incoming calls. I could not hear the caller and the caller could not hear me. Outgoi g calls was perfect. I then did an upgrade to os 14. It worked fine for the first 15 minutes (my test period). I thought it fixed the issu3, but the next day, the same issue happened again. A reboot only fixes the issue temporarily before it starts doing thhe same thing again.

I fully agree with you as I have posted this same problem in this forum. I feel this iPhone 12Pro is a big failure and a waste of money. The issue in not hearing incoming calls is not an issue with the speaker but a software issue as the caller also can’t hear us speak. It’s high time Apple did something to fix this as their reputation is severely affected.

Hi Michelle. It’s been a while since I have had any issues but recently I have found myself having the same issue, what I have noticed is when it’s pair to my jabra evolve 65 headset once you disconnect it has this issue (still intermittent though) I brought some cheap frog headset, what I have noticed if you listen to music sometimes as it starts a new song it only plays through one speaker if you turn the headphones off like this when you receive a call you can’t hear them requiring a reset to the phone. If you pause the song and play again this fixes the issue, and I have never had a caller issue on the phone when I have done this. Just a bit of info to help apple resolve the issue.

I am on the phone now to Apple and they're also telling me its because of the SETTINGS / MOBILE / MOBILE DATA OPTIONS being on Roaming On - Voice & Data being on "5G Auto" and this could be the issue as my SIM card plan isn't on the 5G plan...

BUT I was never on the 5G plan and first week I could hear all incoming calls anyway - so this doesn't make sense.

I could hear all incoming calls just fine before(and I don't have a 5G plan) and now for a week I cant hear any incoming call. All incoming calls sound dead !!! Maybe the new iOS 14.4.2 is the CULPRIT

Hi,

I have had the 12 Pro since November and everything has been fine till about 2 weeks ago and now I cant hear calls when I make a call or receive them? I have to switch my phone off and back on to be able to make a call. I have tried everything and all the solutions on here and others that have been posted and the problem still happens. There is nothing wrong with the speak or anything like that, as it works, even when playing music etc. This has to be done to a software issue.

I have even tried the factory reset etc and it all still happens. This is very frustrating as the phone is used for work and its pretty embarrassing when I answer a call and cant hear anything and I have to put it down, switch my phone off and ring them again....only for it to happen to the next call.

I have seen a lot of people posting about this so I know its a common fault, so please tell me you have managed to find a solution for this or at least issue an upgrade IOS to solve the issue?

Thanks

I have a problem with my iPhone 12 Pro. When I receive calls and attempt to hear, I hear nothing but when I make a call on the same number, it works fine. Technically, it's the incoming call that I am not able to hear. After I reboot my device, It works fine for few days and then repeats again.

Tried everything like network reset, reboot device, restore with iTunes and the problem repeats after every 2 weeks. First I thought, it could be carrier issues, contacted my service provider and they investigated the issue, nothing is wrong from their end.

After everything, I decided to make a visit to the Genius Bar. They ran diagnostics, concluded nothing is wrong with the hardware which I really don't think. Came back home with disappointment. I am thinking to replace the phone using Express replacement service. Gonna check for a week, if the problem persists, I would go ahead with the replacement with Apple support. Really hoping that it turns out to be a software problem and Apple comes out with a fix in the next update. Someone else in the same boat lately??

This is very disappointing!

I have the same problem and am beyond annoyed. This has been my biggest purchase regret ever. Every 2 weeks the problem comes back, only fix is to restart it. Sent it to Apple and they said they have rebooted the software. After going through the agonising task of transferring and updating my apps, the problem came back. Now I have to send the phone again to have the hardware checked🙄. Are they serious. This is a faulty handset that they should just recall.

I have the exact same issue with iPhone 12 mini (ver 14.4). I tried disabling BT, calls on other devices etc. Nothing works. When I initiate a call it works fine when someone calls me they do not hear me, I can not hear them.

Soft reset solves the problem for a few days (sometimes) hours and it starts happening again. As if another app is interfering with the phone app. Very dissapointing.

I have the same problem since I bought the iphone12 (3 weeks ago).

Can't hear incoming calls, but when I'm calling back there is no problem.

I tried to turn off the phone and it works for one day...

Now I reset the network settings and switched to 4G, I hope it is not a temproray solution, its really not OK that we can't hear calls!!! Apple please fix this problem!!!

So this weekend I was talking to a family member who without prompting told me both his and wife’s iPhone 12 and 12 pro were doing exactly the same.

Today I’ve spoken to Apple, most unhelpful asking me the usual trouble shooting steps which I’d already done. Just to eliminate any other causes I have spoken to my network provider in the UK EE. They have no issues logged but did suggest I try a new sim. I’ll give that a go but don’t hold out much hope, until Apple acknowledge there is a software issue.
