IPad Pro 1st gen pencil won’t stay paired or charged AND Attached keyboard/cover has accessory not supported error

IPad pencil won’t stay paired or charged AND Attached keyboard/cover has accessory not found error. They both stopped working.

pencil keeps searching asks very quickly to pairs. Pairs and says not connected. The completely drops the connection and doesn’t find in in the Bluetooth options. If I can connect it it starts over at saying the pencil is a 3% even if it was just at 87% and the numbers go up and down as it charges.

The keyboard keeps getting the accessory not supported error. Even though I bought everything together from Apple and it was all functioning fine until last year. I haven’t had time to try and fix it again as it usually takes up hours of your time.

The iPad PRO and accessories are all first generation. Everything is updated. I followed all suggested steps for rebooting, forgetting pencil, trying magnets on the keyboard and so forth.

Hi TH_TV,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today. It sounds like you are no longer able to pair your Apple Pencil or Smart Keyboard with an iPad Pro.

For your Smart Keyboard we'd recommend following:

"If your iPad doesn't detect your Smart Keyboard Folio or Smart Keyboard or you see an "Accessory not supported" alert on your iPad, make sure there's no debris or plastic covering on the Smart Connector pins on the keyboard or the Smart Connector on the iPad. Also, try these steps:

  1. Make sure that your iPad and Smart Keyboard Folio or Smart Keyboard are in the Type position and that you have the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
  2. Remove the Smart Keyboard Folio or Smart Keyboard from your iPad.
  3. Restart your iPad.
  4. Reconnect the Smart Keyboard Folio or Smart Keyboard."

For your Pencil, please follow:

"If your Apple Pencil won't pair with your iPad

  1. Make sure to center your Apple Pencil (2nd generation) on the magnetic connector on the right edge of the iPad. For an Apple Pencil (1st generation), remove the cap and plug your Apple Pencil into the Lightning connector on your iPad.
  2. Restart your iPad, then try to pair again.
  3. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.
  4. On the same screen, look under My Devices for your Apple Pencil. If you see it, tap . Then tap Forget this Device.
  5. Connect your Apple Pencil in to your iPad and tap the Pair button when it appears after a few seconds.
  6. If you don't see the Pair button, wait for one minute while your Apple Pencil charges. Then try connecting your Apple Pencil again and wait until you see the Pair button.
  7. If you still don’t see the Pair button, contact Apple Support."

If they continue not to pair, they may require service. We'd advise following step 7 and contacting support.

Have a fantastic day!
