macVPN

Does anyone have any knowledge of this internet security VPN? It's a freebie, but I don't know anything

about it. Says it supports Mac OS X 10.9 - OS 10.15. A search on "WhoIS? for macVPN.com or macVPN.app brings up mentions of Cloudflare, but I don't know if they own macVPN or where they're based. I would just like to be sure this is no kind of security trap/threat. It's not available thru the App Store. Thanks.

Thank you. I did not know that and I keep getting hammered on by Avast among others, telling me w/o it I'm open to hackers, etc. knowing my location, a "crack in my security," etc. etc. so I've been checking it out thinking it was something I should have.

But seeing what was out there at low/no cost. So since I'm not connecting to corporate, business, or any private networks, it's great to find out that I don't actually need it. I surf a lot of financial sites for research, but that's about it. Thanks again.

Why are you asking? Are you planning on using the VPN to create a secure tunnel to a corporation, school. or other institution? If so, contact the VPN server admin to discuss the VPN client and configuration requirements. If you are asking about a public VPN be aware that these do not provide any security and all your data is routed through the public VPN server on its way to the Internet.

It serves absolutely no purpose other than to feed all of your data to the VPN provider. It provides zero additional security or privacy over not using one. It is nothing but a glorified proxy server.

You do not need a VPN unless you're connecting to a secure private network like a corporate network to access company resources. You could set up a private VPN to access data on your own secure network at home if you wanted to, but with the plethora of secure cloud storage options like iCloud, OneDrive, etc. that's overkill.
