Messages on Mac and iPad are not marked read after I’ve read them on my iPhone

Most of the time I read my text messages (both iMessages and SMS) on my iPhone. When I go to my MacBook or my iPad, they show up as unread. I am running the most current versions of Mac OS and iOS, use the same iCloud account for all devices, and have text message forwarding to my MacBook and my iPad enabled on my iPhone.

How do I set all devices up so that a read message is marked read on all of my devices, no matter which one I first read the message?
