Photos.app crashes when editing photos with Portrait Mode

I took some pictures this morning with my iPhone 12 Pro using Portrait Mode. The photos are synced to my Mac running Big Sur 11.1 via iCloud.

When I attempt to edit the portrait mode photos on my Mac, Photos.app crashes about 15 seconds after clicking the Edit button in the toolbar. Other, non-Portrait Mode photos can be edited just fine.

I'm looking for suggestions as to how I should troubleshoot this.

Thanks!

This has been a recurring problem with my iPhone 12 Pro Max and my MBP 16 running Big Sur. It seems to be triggered by trying to edit an image when the full res has not yet downloaded (the ~15 second delay matches the full res download time).

The only work around I've found is rather drastic. Delete the photo library from Pictures (take a backup first!!!!!), then create a new one and let it sync from iCloud with download originals enabled.

Don't try and edit anything until it's fully downloaded, it will just fail again.

Edit: It also seems if I air drop the image to the mac I can edit them which would support the idea that this is download related.

Thanks for the reply. I checked my settings and I have "Download Originals to this Mac" enabled so all the images I'm attempting to edit should be the full resolution versions.

I tried the AirDrop trick and you're right, the dropped file can be edited without issue. One thing I noticed is the dropped file is smaller in size (1.3 MB) when compared to the iCloud synced file (2.2 MB). There might be a setting on the phone that sends smaller size files. I'll have to look into this.

I have other editing options available to me if needed so I'm not sure I want to go through the process of deleting the library and syncing, but will keep that in mind if it becomes a bigger issue.

Thanks again!

Edit: On a side-note, I checked my wife's iMac, which is running Big Sur 11.1, and she is able to edit Portrait Mode photos, but she uses an iPhone 11 running 14.3. I'll send her some pictures from my phone later today and see if she can edit those after they sync.
