I just migrated from an old mac book to a new one. I used a Time Capsule to backup the old MacBook. the new mac book will not back up to the Time Capsule. Error message "two disks the same name". Any ideas?

Because you migrated the backup name of the old computer and the new one is the same. Change the name of the computer.

It is under Preferences / Sharing. Computer name at the top.

What OS was the old computer and what OS is the new one?

People often forget when you do a full migration everything comes over including the old names.. on a network this is undesirable to say the least. Apple usually manage to add a (1) to the name so you don't get clashes.. but I recommend using a completely different share name on the computer.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumerics.

Life works better that way.

You have powered off the entire network, waited a minute, started the modem first and let it run a full minute, then started the next device and let it run for a minute, then continuing by starting one device at a time about a minute apart, correct?

If yes, and your new Mac is running Big Sur, there are loads of weird issues with Time Machine in Big Sur, so it may take some time to sort things out.
